European Senior Championships 2011

Post by mike222 »

The championships start for real today with the draw taking place this afternoon and the preliminary fights commencing tomorrow.
The tournament is slightly devalued with Russia and Ukraine both sending second string teams and France a depleted squad ,so the likes of Lomachenko and Mekhontsev are not appearing.
Those countries prefering to concentrate on the World Championships which occurs later in the year.
Neverless it is still enthralling with several youngsters taking part in their first Elite tournament such as Joe Ward,Charlie Edwards and Salman Alizada.
Late withdrawals include Clemente Russo and Paddy Barnes both with injuries

Quite a surprise,I knew Conlon had improved but I didnt think he would beat Yafai who was probably favourite for Gold with Aloyan not competing. He had recently beat Tommy Stubbs as well.

Flyweight very strong in Ireland with Phelan and Burnett serious young operators and Gereghty and Molloy still around. Conlon actually lost the Ulster final this year to yet another Irish fly Declan Milligan , on an admittedly bad computer cock-up where all 5 judges gave it to him but he lost on accepted scores!

I have just watched the Nevin fight and I agree he won the fight.
The first round score 4-3 to Nevin was the key,Nevin was too quick for the Russian and I scored it comfortably for Nevin by at least four points.
To be fair though I wasnt sitting at ringside.

We could still get Stalker v Moylette.
Semis start 2pm Ankara time tomorrow.
If you look at Turkish tournaments like the Prime Ministers cup-they always win at least one gold but this is a EUBC competition and should be OK

Russian Belik Galanov will meet Azebajani Salmon Alizada in the final at 49kgs.The Russian cruised by Andova 18-7 whilst Alizada the world youth champion beat Charlie Edwards by 24-14 but both young men excelled in their first major senior tournament.
At 56kgs the Russian Dmitri Polyanski comfortably beat the Turk Furkan Ulas18-8 and will meet the Moldovan Vyacheslav Gojan in the final who edged by Romanian Andrei Razvan on a 12-9 score in a minor upset.John Joe Nevin defeated Gojan recently.
At 64 the final is a match between England and Ireland.Tom Stalker won by a walkover whilst Ray Moylette had a tough one winning by a score of 18-16 over Azebajani Hajialliyev and there should have been another one Nevin against Campbell.
At middleweight Russian favourite Maxim Koptyakov defeated his Ukrainian opponent Mitrofanov handily by 26-11 and will meet Turk Adem Kilici who got by Georgian Khostashvilli 19-14.Both men were expected to win and are experienced campaigners.
Finally at heavyweight Bulgarian Tervel Pulev as predicted defeated another Turk Muzzafer 17-11 and will face teenager Teymur Mammadov from Azebajan who has done well to reach the final and is ranked the worlds best young boxer at Heavyweight. However Pulev will be very formidable
Rest of the semis later

Fred Evans and Joe Ward joined Tom Stalker and Ray Moylette in tomorrows finals after semi-final wins this afternoon.Evans looked too big and clever for his georgian opponent at Welterweight in a win that will make up for his and his Welsh team-mate Selbys disappointment at the commonwealth games.Evans will meet the compact Belarussian Magomed Nurutdinov.
Ward I felt looked a little tired in his semi with experienced Hungarian Imre Szello but he came through nevertheless. Not many teenagers can compete at this level in the heavier weights and he is a remarkable athlete
At lightweight Domenico Valentino will meet surprise finalist Faith Keles from Turkey in the final.
Two Welsh, two Irish and one Englishman in the finals

Astonishing results with the underdog winning at least eight perhaps nine titles and I was busy today and missed them all, but they are probably up on either www.aibaboxing.tv on youtube or the russian website www boxing-fbr.ru
