Last night's Ringside

When I was watching it last night I was thinking Jim Watt would be better in the studio come fight night and put Barry McGuigan in the co-commentator role. I just don't like Watt as a commentator but thought he was excellent in the studio.

Disagree, I've never been a fan of McGuigan as a co-commentator. Sure he hasn't done it for a while regularly so is more experienced than when I last heard him - but I feel he has always been good at the "between round special comments" and then doing the analysis.

I disagree about Watt, I just think he is great - I would like to see him dart around between studio and commentory, like he used to do on ITV..... Jim Rosenthal doing something similar - it works for HBO.

The thing that annoys me about Watt commentating is that he picks a fighter at the start of the fight and over emphasises any success that fighter has throughout the fight whilst ignoring the opponent's punches landing. I feel he wrongly sways a lot of viewers opinions when calling a bout. A commentator shouldn't be biased but he basically cheer-leads from ringside.

Glyn Leach might only have a face for radio:-) but I can't help thinking that he is THE only main guy missing from this Sky equazion and as a result his magzine doesn't get the profile it deserves.. being the worlds best monthly.

Are they playing up to this sub-plot? Getting out of a f**king tent (the symbolism was obvious) to go and watch the tennis together? And Adam's tender comments during the broadcast?

Thanks for the kind words, but never gonna happen Jon. Don't get me wrong, I could do with the 4-500 notes I've heard they pay guests, but not at the price of becoming 'known', so to speak. I'm very private, the thought of even one person in the pub, in the street, wherever, going 'isn't that ...' fills me with complete horror. Also, it's important to me that myself and BM stay outside 'the loop' — I'm very protective of our independence and wouldn't want it to appear even slightly compromised by being 'part of the gang'. I want to be able to stand back and give an honest opinion, good or bad, on Sky's product and have people trust it without them being able to say 'yeah, but he takes their money'.

Sorry, I will disagree there also. Not saying he doesn't have a bad night every now and again - but can you give examples?

Some people said he did that with Groves vs Degale.... but that was a strange fight, and he did score it for Degale (so he couldn't have been that bias).... Groves was, for the most part, boxing the smart fight - Degale was boxing badly but doing more. Don't blame him for giving praise on the thinking fighter.

I would love to have heard him on commentory on Froch vs Dirrell and Hopkins vs Joe Cal.

I must say that was a good edition. I thought Adam Smith asked some good questions to Ricky etc, and liked the free talking of the 3 guests.

Really good to get Watts, Hattons and McGuigans ideas about what they think Hayes strategy should be too.

I'll admit, off the top of my head I can't think of an example but I can remember thinking "shut up Jim" in a few fights where he was praising a fighters work and when the other lad landed a similar punch there was silence from the commentary table. Hardcore fans like us can tell the difference but I have often found a casual fan scores a fight with their ears rather than their eyes.

yes last night was very good, i always enjoy ringside though, sometimes froch loves himself to much on there or calzalge dont know what to say or john conteh dont say anything, last night was really good as all 3 guests spoke alot and slightly differ in opinion which made it a great watch !

Hard to say, Johnny wasn't a great Wlad lol - he kept leaning forward and he didn't stick his lead leg out far enough. But in order I'd go 1 Watt 2 Ricky 3 Barry

I would go in that order also.

Watt's views were the most realistic, i'm glad that he ignored the sh*te McGuigan offered and stuck to his own views.

I agree with Hatton that Haye will be fainting to draw the right hand, but i dont necessarily agree that he will be aiming to block the jab, i think he will be more inclined to step back or get out of the way of it. Its like a punch in itself and he wont want to risk getting caught with it to often.

Barry was on another planet IMO, Haye will never try to take the center of the ring, that's the dumbest sh*t i've heard all week. Nor will Haye be throwing any of the combinations he was suggesting.

Keeping the same guests throughout and getting their opinions on all the subjects also works better IMO, than different guests for different subjects. Watt and McGuigan were class and always are to be honest they both talk total sense and explain there opinions well

I just got round to watching it tonight. It bettered last week's episode which I thought was the best bit of work Ringside has done.

Smith and Nelson are starting to form a good double act.

But the conversation between McGuigan, Hatton and Watt was entertaining, enlightening and just a joy to watch. Their advice for Haye via ring work with Nelson was terrific.

A show that is getting better and better.

Seriously, as others have said it was a brilliant show. Some of the low key clips of the build up to the guests own big fights brought back some great memories.

Bob Mee has such a fantastically authoritative voice which just rings absolutely true
