So, went to see some cross fit chap today and he did the old fitness assesment thing. The idea behind it is for some extra strength and conditioning training to go with all my other training. Seemed good, even though he just did an assessment - guess i'll find out more as the weeks progress and he turns me into a machine.
Anyone else done this malarky (not the web based ones, but actually personal training with cross-fit dudes)??

Cross fit is great for cardio, but doesnt really have a huge effect on strength unless you are weak as fornicate to start with.

Re: Cross-fit
He's going to have a load a deads, squats, kettlebells and the like going on as well as fitness apparently... whilst his company is under the cross-fit banner, he's got a few of our pro fighters ready for fights and seems to know his shit. We'll see, anyway... won't do any harm even if i just get fitter. I'm doing it specifically to get more functionally fit for grappling comps, as opposed to being a cross-fit fanatic.
All he did today was check resting heart rate, then make me row at full capacity for 4 mins and check heart rate every 30secs, and then check how long it took to recover to resting HR. Then checked maximum for deadlift and bench press - and we'll start training properly next week. He reckons should more than double both deads and bench, but he may be full of shit.

Re: Cross-fit
Ed, I created a thread on the training forum on UG to get advice to compliment my Jits. Have a read. Also check out the MIll Hill site as they posted training videos of Andy Marshalls regimes he does with Daniel. He's put on 10kgs of muscle.
Also the URL I posted to you for Origin Gis have an amazing piece of kit to develop grip strength. I'm getting it so let me know if you want one. It's a gi collar you can wrap around anything to develop your pistol grip and monkey grip. It's only $25.

If deads, squats, and kettlebells are thrown in, it should be great. Those lifts alone will make every lift you do stronger.EddieShredder wrote:He's going to have a load a deads, squats, kettlebells and the like going on as well as fitness apparently... whilst his company is under the cross-fit banner, he's got a few of our pro fighters ready for fights and seems to know his shit. Re: Cross-fit
Totally disagree. The only guys who won't experience significant gains are those who are already serious powerlifters. Check out some of the performances in the Crossfit Games to see how good these guys are:BigJuicyHog wrote:Cross fit is great for cardio, but doesnt really have a huge effect on strength unless you are weak as eff to start with.

Eddie, in answer to your question, it's the best thing I've ever encountered - experienced serious gains in both strength and CV despite being in my late 30s. Have you looked at all the web resources around crossfit? As I've said elsewhere, the journal's a great investment and the message board is superb for getting insights and advice - http://board.crossfit.com/

I've not had a look at those yet, but i'll be sure to check them out. At the moment I'm only looking to fit it in once a week, as I already train grappling 5days a week now, and swim once a week. Might have to start doing a bit on the odd morning too.Deserter wrote:Totally disagree. The only guys who won't experience significant gains are those who are already serious powerlifters. I read last night about some cross fit chap who's resting heart rate was 35
Re: Cross-fit
To be honest, you'll struggle to get any benefit out of it doing it once a week as the programming cycle is based on three days on, one day off. It's all about intensity rather than length of time in the gym though, so perfectly plausible to do that in the mornings and train in the evenings.EddieShredder wrote:I've not had a look at those yet, but i'll be sure to check them out.
