How do you guys think he would have got on had he turned pro 1989-90 time,when he would a been 27/28yrs old,obviously he was a top amateur winning 8 ABA titles&boxing in 2 Olympic games&being Commenwealth gold medallist in 86,but would he have adapted to the pro game&had any success?? we had some decent flyweights around that time in McAuley,Mckenzie&Clinton...

Iv wondered this asked craig a few times why he never n cant really give me a straight answer, just said he got his job at pilkington glass and was happy with that, never seen him box myself, maybe his style wouldnt have been suited to the pro's???? seems strange with such a good amateur pedigree to not at least try a few pro bouts, did you watch him box?

I watched him box many times, he had a good job, travelling the world, just was not interested in turning pro, would have won british title, but above that, I dont think so

Only on tv in a couple of finals&boxing for England...

Pro boxing is a dangerous and unforgiving game - and it's especially hard for Flyweights to make any decent money.

I think John did the right thing - travelled round the world; didn't get battered, fought in the olympics.....good choice

Wasn't the job at Pilks tied in with his boxing too? Kind of an ambassador for the company/St.Helens, time off for tournaments etc.

Dunno , he still works there now tho n has his gym in wigan, remember when i was in school n they had a picture of him up in the gym, didnt have a clue who he was at the time lol,

John peaked in 1986 when he destroyed everyone and romped to gold in the Commonwealth Games (playing with the Canadian en route). By 1988 he was fading and he lost his first fight of the Olympics. Nevertheless, Lyon was able to make it a record eight ABA titles in 1989, a record that will surely never be broken. Some fighter!
