WHICH HEAVYWEIGHT HAD THE BEST CHANCE OF BEATING JOE LOUIS?
In my opinion he was the greatest heavyweight of all time. and a lot of other experts and fans share that opinion as well. now im asking which of all the other true greats would have had the best chance of beating louis?? think styles here.
I always had the impression that louis had the most trouble with fast boxers and counterpunchers. he said years later however that he didnt like being crowded and that his biggest flaw was getting crowded. so he seems to feel he would have had trouble with crowders swarmers. what do u think??
I say his toughest fight would have been against muhammad ali or Larry holmes and even walcott. I think the fast boxers gave him more trouble than the marcianos and frazier and foreman.

Ali would beat him.
I'd give Marciano a good chance, but maybe less than 50%.
I'd give Dempsey 50/50 against him.
Johnson -- who knows.
I tend to agree about the crowding. Maybe the reason people didn't crowd Louis too much was because they got KTFO when they tried it? I think Louis would knock Frasier out.

louis defintely lost a little when he returned from a 4 year layoff cause of the war. He still had fight in him against tami maurellio and jersey joe, but he defintely showed a lot of signs of aging as walcott basically beat him in both fights.
BY THE WAY, WHAT ROUND DID WALCOTT KNOCK LOUIS DOWN IN THEIR 2ND FIGHT????? I NEVER HEAR MUCH OF THAT KNOCKDOWN.

Joe showed he still had some power though and for one split second walcott tried to slug it out with him, louis resorted himself back to old form and fired 5 fast powerful shots to walcotts head and the final right put him down for good. jersey joe was on his way to victory but louis showed just like the conn fight, he had a lot of heart to go along with his power and boxing ability.

another thing i notived about louis and other old time fighters is they didnt have muscle buldging out like some of todays guy do partly due to all the technology and supplements and equipment. LOUIS DIDNT LOOK STRONG BUT HE WAS INCREDIBLY STRONG. HE HAD WHAT I LIKE TO CALL FARMER STRENTGH. ALL THAT CHOOPPING WOOD ALONG WITH OTHER THINGS GAVE HIM A LOT OF STRENTGH ALONG WITH THE OTHER OLD TIME FIGHTERS. THEY GOT THEIR STRENTGH DOING WORK IN THE COUNTRY, NOT LIFTING BARBELLS.
ILL SAY THIS, FOR A GUY THAT DIDNT LOOK IMMENSLY MUSCULAR, HE HAD alllllllot of power. WHO WAS THE OPPONENT THAT DID A 360 AFTER GETTING HIT BY LOUIS RIGHT???
IT ALSO SHOWS U DONT NEED TO BE HUGE TO BE A SUCCESS AT BOXCING. I EVEN HEARD SOME TRAINERS DONT WANT THERE FIGHTERS LIFTING CAUSE IT MAKES THEM PUT ON MUSCLE THAT CAUSES THEM TO BE SLOWER.

Louis, Jack Johnson
Even the young Joe Louis might have been dropped by Walcott as he seemed to get knocked down with some frequency but I would have expected a young Louis to dispatch Walcott fairly quickly if he got close.
Some people think Jack Johnson could beat Joe Louis but I would like to know more fighters opinions on the matter.

Buddy Baer
I think it was the giant Buddy Baer (6 ft 6 1/2 in and 250 lb) who was spun around by Louis. Baer was one of the better fighters of the era but was no match for Louis despite his huge size advantage.

How about a prime Jim Jeffries? At his best, Jeff had a chin like battleship steel, tremendous stamina and a crushing left hook.
Another would be Jack Dempsey. Fast and terrific power in both hands, excellent beard too.
I'd go along with Tunney. Smart fighter. Great defensive skills. Fast hands and good power. Marciano beat an old Louis, but he had the tools to be trouble for a young one too.
Sam Langford would likely have beaten young Louis. He had too many weapons for Joe. Louis couldn't hit him hard enough to knock him out, but Sam would've found a way to put Joe on the canvas for ten.

I don't know. I think Ali would outbox him and not do something stupid like Billy Conn did and get too close. So I say Ali would beat him by decision even though I think Joe is the number one all time heavyweight.
Another few fighters that could get Joe are the ones that have otherworldly power. If Joe boxes and doesn't get into a slugfest with these guys he beats all of them by late round KO or decision, but if he goes toe to toe with any of these 3 he could go to sleep. Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Sonny Liston.

I think Ali could outbox him. Conn showed the way, but Conn was no where near Ali, and Conn had no chin like Ali.
Still, Joe would beat him in a rematch. Joe figured guys out pretty good and made adjustments.
Some heavy bangers might have bombed him out (Tyson, Foreman, etc) but that is all puncher's chance.
In reality, I think Louis was the greatest fighting machine boxing has ever known.
