When it comes to "Guts" . . .

We all have opponents we just can't beat. Marco Antonio Barrera had Junior Jones, Art Aragon had Carmen Basileo, and Remy met his match in Manuel.
After going nine rounds with the premiere ELA burrito, a giant snow man from Northern Europe poses no challenge.
With amateur boxing changing it's policy on body punching, and with Remy spending a little time in the land of great body punchers, our Norwegian friend may just revolutionize amateur boxing in the world's cold zone. These guys aren't used to protecting their belly.

After his go with Manuel, Remy now appreciates the effect of body shots. He'll be fighting a little more like a Mexican, which is bad news for "The Snow Man"!
Remy, your Southern Cal fan base expects news & photos. Remember, a well placed gancho to the gut will melt an Ice Man.

You also need to bring home Jalapeno peppers. Throw a few into your breakfast, lunch and dinner. They will toughen you up, and soon you'll be body punching like Kid Azteca.
Believe it or not, this is what my late friend, Karl Nelson, used to tell me. Karl loved the Mexican greats and he'd tell me that Jalpeno peppers make men tougher.
He then tried to hold his laughter when I took his dare and tossed a few in my oatmeal.
When I told Mel what I had done, he just shook his head and turned to talk with his invisable friend, "Dumb bastid!"

I know just how you felt, because that's how I felt when I watched Johnny Flores throw in the towel for Dwight Hawkins, in the 10th round of his bout with Antonio Gomez.
That was the last round of The Hawk's career. When we walked out of The Forum that night (Hawk-Gomez followed Olivares-Rose) in 1969, I saw tears in the eyes of a lot of old school LA personalities.

A special thanks to my pal and West Coast Boxing mentor, Frank Baltazar, for nominating my cousin Louie Burke for the Hall of Fame. You've given the Burke family a great night and a memory that will last a lifetime. Their whole family was proud. The De La O's shared in their happiness and for that I thank you Frank, from the bottom of my heart.

Thanks to Don Fraser for putting on a great Induction ceremony. The California Boxing Hall of Fame is truly a class act.

Thanks to Rick Farris and the CBHOF for entrusting me with accepting the induction award for Fritzie Zivic. I was as nervous as hell, but I didn't want to let Rick and te CBHOF down, as well as my family who were excited for me. Somehow, with Rick nearby for support, I got through it.

In fact, I was so nervous I didn't eat my meal, so the first thing I did when we got back to Whittier was go to "In and Out" for a Double Double Hamburger.

For my family, both the Burkes and De La O's, Saturday night was truly a special night, almost magical.

Paul, I agree with AA that this fight made him "The Man". He became the man to be reckon with if you wanted to be "The Man" of L.A. boxing in that Golden Era. An era when boxers acted like stars, dressed like stars, WERE STARS!!!!
