Any thoughts on Griffith / Rodriquez?

Post by The Second God »

A couple guys who dominated Friday nights for a long time. Griffith IMO was one hell of a champion. But he had trouble with Rodriquez.

I'd appreciate comments and opinions on this match-up between the two.

I wish I could get copies of their fights.

I too rate Emile very highly as a boxer. I also believe Rodriguez to be one of the greats so having trouble with him is par for the course.

I also hope to hear of anyone else's thoughts on these two.

I have not seen their 4-fight rivalry...But according to some accounts by some magazines that I have read, Griffith won the first fight, Rodriguez the second, Griffith won the third, but many say that Rodriguez won the rubber match and Griffith again won in the fourth fight.
All fights ended by decision.

Griffith shared the highlights of the decade by fighing his greatest fights against Cuban rivals.

I'll always remember Rodriguez for the fight he had with Benvenuti for the middleweight title in Italy.

Rodriguez was doing well in the fight, gaining the upper hand in a close fight, had Nino badly cut, and then he got put to sleep by a beauty of a left hook.

I have seen all four fights in full.
The first 10 round fight is terribly hard to score, they are both two great, great and fast boxers.
The first title fight was a sure win for Rodriguez.
The second title fight was a close but just win for Griffith.
In the third title fight Griffith got the decision, but I have Rodriguez a clear winner 10-5 or 9-6.

I've seen two of the four, both of which I had Rodriguez winning (one of which was officially scored for Griffith, the other for Rodriguez). I've spoken to multiple men who've seen the series in its entirety who had Rodriguez winning all 4 bouts. The final bout in particular was said to have been a highway robbery.
