Gene Tunney

Post by Rory McCloskey »

Gene Tunney..not a well received fighter of his time because he defeated the beloved Jack Dempsey TWICE.. but i but tunney as the 5 ranked heavyweight of all time..behind ali, marciano, dempsey, louis, johnson. he finished his career 72-2-1 his onyl losses coming from harry greb (who was also a great fighter.. he beat loughran and tunney twice)... but tunney also was able to beat greb 3 times as well as loughran.. although his second defeat of dempsey will always be plagued because of the long count, but if u watch the fight it is obvious that tunney came to his senses seconds before the count was finished, he was simply rejuvanating...tunney was a very slick fighter who could pack a punch and take a few as well...were does he rank in your lists?? please say at least top 10

He often gets overlooked these days. A master boxer who would be small by today's standards and is difficult to rate because I think he only had a few fights at heavy. I think he'd have dropped decisions to Johnson and Ali, would have posed Louis all kinds of problems and would have beaten most of the other greats.

I'd say top 10 at heavy, top 5 at light heavy.
