Grimm

A lot was said at the time, Leonard claimed he heard Duran shout No Mas.

Duran denied it, Someone at ringside said they heard Duran saying

"No More, I will not fight a clown" or Spanish words to that extent.

Duran was ridiculed by Leonard at the post fight analysis and called a cry baby and Leonard said live on TV "No Mas, No Mas I can't take anymore"

To boost his already inflated ego.

What actually happened only Duran & Carlos Eleta really know

Interestingly enought the fight was only 4 rounds Leonard, 2 Duran....if my memory serves me right. Duran was still very much in the fight....Just Leonard in typical Leonord fashion didn't want to fight....so Duran quit....can't say I blame him. He would have never won a decision, he could have knocked Leonard down every round, and he would have lost on points.......America's baby Sugar Ray...the most over rated fighter of my lifetime.

Then to top it off they give him Haglers MW crown, and he didn'tdo enough to take the champoions belts from Hagler IMHO. Then they gave him a draw in the rematch with Hearns......It is only fitting that "Terrible" Terry Norris kicked his ass, and Hector "Macho" Comacho, KO'd him. :box: :box:

Duran vs Hagler

I would expect the fight hurts Hagler's reputation since one would think a great middleweight would beat a great lightweight who was well past his prime and fighting at a weight at which he was less effective. Duran certainly was a great fighter but I still think it a bit odd that Duran would be fighting evenly with all-time great middleweights.

I thought Hagler won clearly without at anytime looking really comfortable. That great skill Roberto had of turning his head at exactly the right moment made a lot of Marvin's shots miss but Hagler still landed enough to be winning the rounds on my card.

As a couple of people have mentioned though, scoring is very subjective.

And the fellow who made a case for as many as 8 rounds being even surely can't argue with anyone who calls it either way...

I saw this fight live on a closed circuit venue in my city Vancouver, Canada, the place was very noisy so I wasn't influenced by the commentators. I was a huge Duran fan, and was in Durans corner (in spirit) during all the fights of his that I witnessed, and this one was no exception. I thought Hagler won the fight, by a few rounds, maybe 3 or 4, which concidering who Duran was up against was quite an accomplishment in my opinion to say the least. At one point I thought Hagler was gona stop Duran, but Duran seemed to suck it up and get his second wind. I thought it was more a case of Hagler showing Duran to much respect, if he came out at the start of that fight (and the SRL fight as well) like he did against Hearns I figure he would have crushed both Duran and SRL as well, but for some reason he chose to box both of these guys, why we will never know.

At the end of the fight with Haglers jiving around the way he did, and Durans staring at him, well Duran always stared his opponents down, and I think Hagler tried to show that he easily won the fight and had no worries about the judges scoring the fight.
At the end of this fight I remember Duran telling the commentators to look at him as not a coward but a Man, he told them see I am not afraid, he wanted to vindicate himself for the New Orleans debacle.
No one wanted to fight Hagler at this time, Duran was the first to rise to the challenge and he was the smallest one in size, Hearns didn't want to go up against Hagler, and SRL said that Hagler was to big, not until they saw Duran fight him did they grow the balls to take Hagler on!

Clinching is a part of boxing, its a tactic, it works to slow your opponents progress, also slows the action down, it works to manuever your opponent in a direction you wish him to go, and if you have ever done it (been in the ring) you will know that it can wear you down as well if you're on the receiving end of it. As far as scoring goes, I don't think they do, but isn't scoring subjective to the judges at ringside as well? So who knows right, maybe seeing someone getting out hustled works against them for one judge or another.

cheers M.O.
