Forum Rules

Post by Tantum »

No posting under multiple user names...

I posted this here since I think it will get more positive attention.

On the current scene there are people who post under a handful or more usernames, troll, call names, start as much bullshit as they can... And it's completely ruined the current scene, and no one is doing anything about it. The mods just sit there and do absolutely nothing.

The current scene used to be decent, now it's just totally wrecked... And the Boxers of the Past forum is slowly following in its footsteps.

Something needs to be done... The "Hands Off" approach will no longer work.

I agree to a point with you. I've come here a little more often for good boxing conversation. I really don't cause much of a ruckus myself in the current scene or have to many problems with most posters there. There are a few people ( And they know who they are) that are really running the current scene down into the ground. One person in particular comes to mind.....hopefully they can clean it up. I still think an off topic forum would be great to talk about other sports, or even for some trash talking. I think it would help clean up the current scene forum. Keep the current scene to boxing only and take everything else to the off topic forum.........

I agree with your view on both forums, Tantum.

There are many, many great people who love boxing and are involved themselves (boxers, managers, trainers, media people, etc) who are put off posting on the forums of this great site, because of the trolling that goes on.

Who can blame them?

Moderators taking the 'free-to-all' approach is all good... until the freedom of others is tainted, and the place is not very 'free' at all, even though in theory it is.

For example, the mods would say "there is no trouble for anyone posting as long as they have a keyboard and screen and internet access".

That's all well and good, but is a person who lives in a degenerate block of flats with gangs mingling at the intercom outside free also? In theory no one is holding them back going to the shops at night?

It is the threat of violence that taints the freedom of their environment. Likewise, the threat of trolling does the same to the Current Scene, which is an environment where you know you are going to get attacked by some shill keyboard warrior who has very limited knowledge about boxers/issues he seems to get very passionate, and personal, about, not very long after you join.

Trolling has no part in free speech, or in debate. It also has no place on the forums of the best boxing site on the internet.

If you don't know what the word 'trolling' means, see it defined on this site that is linked, by Blue, on a sticky thread that has OVER THREE THOUSAND VIEWS on the Current Scene.

The mods don't seem to be understand what trolling does or effects it has (or else simply aren't around).

Either way the site suffers.

Hopefully this thread gets some more attention by mods and good posters so we can try to clear it up in the other forums. Great post also Oro :TU:

The Current Scene is ridiculous. It's just a playground for mindless pricks to give people shit. But when there are no moderators round to actually stop it (IE BAN THE PEOPLE, NOT JUST DELETE POSTS AND THREADS), they just feel free to carry on. I really hope this doesn't start happening in this forum too.

I haven't been watching the boxers of the past forum as closely of late, but I can promise that it won't get as bad as you think. It must have just started within the last week, or two because I usually do keep a pretty decent check on it and don't let obvious crap like racial remarks, or just plain abusive remarks go without warning people. I do have an idea though...some other people can offer to be the moderators! It''s a lot easier to sit back and criticize than it is to try to listen to people on one side talking about free speech and about people thinking they have a golden ruler to slap people that get out of line, and then the arguments on the other side of the spectrum! What do you suggest?

Well, I just scanned through all of the threads on the opening page of the boxers of the past forum and I did not see anything out of line, so I'm a little confused about where the unruly behavior is at on that forum?

I think Jaclem would be a good addition to the BOTP forum.

I think the Current Scene needs another 2 active mods, I think myself and MontyCircus would bring the slightly more aggressive(instead of total-passive) approach that the Current Scene obviously needs.

Are there any requirements in being a mod? How about an editor?

>>>Are there any requirements in being a mod? How about an editor?<<<

I don't know about mod, but if you are going to be an editor you have to be serious about the job of working on the database, but other than that I don't think so.

There have been editors in the past that have joined and then started adding crap and bogus results, but with the team of editors that we have, that doesn't get very far before someone notices and the editor adding the crap will be warned and then booted if he doesn't comply, but that's a very rare case.

As far as moderator of the BOTP forum, someone can take my place if they feel they can do a better job, just let me know and I'll inform John, but I can promise you this...you will have to listen to a lot of ridiculous stuff. Someone will be complaining about how the forum is not being run correctly, and then when you do something there will be two that come on and complain that you are trying to rule with an iron fist, or that you just think you know it all because you are a moderator, or editor, or you think you have special priveleges because of...etc, etc..

Hey man, I never said you were doing a bad job...

But you and Ric are editors too, and obviously some stuff is going to go unnoticed... Having more moderators is a good thing, as long as they are good moderators.

I hear you on that one Barry. What happened to VHS WES?? I think we should have maybe a poll on the current forum with people who wouldn't mind being mods. The top person or two could get the nod as a mod. I think with two good mods, it would get cleaned up over there. I wouldn't mind trying out the editor thing or even trying something new, like writing an article about certain fights after watching them. That would be something new for the front page. It could assist alot of people over seas or people that couldn't watch the fights on cable, ppv, etc..........

barry: the BOTP forums is NOWHERE NEAR the level of the Current Scene.

However, a lot of younger posters have started posting on it, and quite a few threads recently have decended into petty squabbling between them and the older members (who should know better!).

These younger posters also seem to have brought about the influx of Tyson threads - a few weeks ago, maybe a month, there was one day I counted ONE THIRD of the topics on the first page of the BOTP forum were about Tyson.

Many were meaningless in that they contained zero new info about Mike while rehashing all the same old arguments (if Tyson had stayed with Rooney, etc, etc. ZZZzz.)

It's a double edged sword moderating this sort of stuff, though. In John Shephard's eyes, I'd imagine it would be good - over 1500 views for Tyson vs. Ali translates as big traffic.

However at the same time many old-age contributer's probably take a look at these types of threads and think "fluck this, I'm going fishing".

So it is kinda hard to draw a line and decide what's best for the site: traffic or 'quality'?

Another thing: maybe it would be a good idea to tell some newer posters to use the search feature when offering mythical matchups. A lot of the time it can be the same big names facing each other, and often there are archived threads that already have long mapped out discussions making great points about these contests!

>>>Hey man, I never said you were doing a bad job...<<<

I know, I wasn't offering the position because of that, nor was I being defensive, although I sounded like it.

Armageto---I think you're right about more moderators than less and also that those in the forum should vote on it. I'll send John a pm about it. I did send him a pm a while back about how we do need to clean the forum up and that I would be the first one in line to reform because I know I can be just as bad as anyone, but he never responded, but then again, he probably gets 500+ e-mails a day. Wes is doing what he can, but it is a little overwhelming, but I completely agree in that there needs to be some rules inacted, well there are rules inacted, but they need to start being inforced more.

BTW, if the BOTP forum needed a new mod, I would recommend Jaclem: has been there ages, knows his stuff, has slain numerous trolls in the past, etc. :box: :TU:

ok Barry, I just always wondered where all those other mods are on the top of the page also. If they don't even post or mod the site anymore, take away their mod title is what I say or at least get their name off the top of the screen. When I first tried to join Boxrec, I had trouble joining and tried to send two emails to 2 different mods to see if they could help. I never had a return response. I wonder if anyone else ran into that than never joined Boxrec. I think with Wes and two other mods, things will straighten out.

I still think an off topic forum would be good. Let that turn into the argue/trash talk/off topic board and keep the current scene and other boards clean. I think for anyone that is good writers or would like to try, a fight recap on the first page could be something interesting to try out. I always liked reading the old links.......\

Oro, there are a few members on the current scene that have been here a while and they are a BIG cause of the problems........

Jaclem would be a great addition. Although I fear he'd walk into the interview and immediately blurt out "hello John. how much?"

Otherwise, bring back the Terapster. He'd sort out this little broo ha ha for free (he'd ban everyone doesn't mention 'Ali' and 'shill' in the same sentence) :D

I've had a few people pm me that have had difficulty with the joining procedure, but I always respond to them and every pm that I get. I agree about an off-topic forum.

I really would like to see the forum cleaned up because the language, me included, can turn a lot of people off. I was pretty surprised recenlty that a couple of newbies posted that they were new in a thread and I was expecting assholes to jump out like a bad case of hemorrhoids, but to my surprise that didn't happen.

Yeah, I did, too, and did not see anything egregious in the BOTP Forum. (However, I did see a lot of crap in that "God Be With You London" thread that made me ashamed of some of my compatriots here.)

I think that the people that cause the shit (i.e. racist remarks and generally 'nastiness') should be warned and then banned if they re-offend. It's good if someone is will to lock threads that spiral out of control, but it then just happens in another thread, and then another thread. Need to take out the fuel from this fire.
