Jeffries: Old School

Post by baulks »

Here is a link to a website that profiles strongmen from yesteryear, some interesting info here on diet and training methods. Has details of a typical training regime of former heavyweight champ James J. Jeffies. These guys punished themselves.

14 miles of alternating sprinting and jogging for 100 yards each...then sparring, heavy bag for 20-25 minutes straight, 3 games of handball, medicine ball, etc. LOL, whoever wrote this has never trained or he/she would know that even one day of exercise like that would be too much to recover from, even with PEDs. If Jeffries or anybody else trained like that for weeks at a time they would be fighting as a 112 pounder. Where do these guys come up with these training routines for the old timers?

...john...excellent post...makes so much sense and yet people still come up with these impossible training tales... the next thing we'll read is a fighter who read atlas shrugged in one sitting...

For once, I agree with John. Jeffries would be the size of a WW at that rate.

However, you have to imagine Jeffries was an insane trainer. His weight loss for the Johnson fight tells me he knew how to train like a demon.

Jeffries was no Marciano; he hated to train. He would balloon up to 250 to 260 between fights. He was criticized in the weeks leading up to the Johnson fight for being too lackadaisical in training - especially in sparring.

It certainly appears that Jeffries had to train very hard. He had phenomenal stamina. He won some long fights against good competition.
