Is it just me or does the cruierweight seem to be the slowest-moving division at the moment - maybe in Britain too, but especially world-wide.
Maybe I'm being tainted by Nelson and Thomson's innactivity, but it seems absolutely no-one is in a rush. Ok, Mormeck faught in April, but that was his 3rd in 3 years. And Bell O'Neil likewise fought just in May, but again he's had 3 fights in 18 months. Would these two not at least be shouting out over a unification, if not organising it? Maybe they are and I've just missed it. And whilst Gurov has been busy, he hasn't defended his EBU belt since November.
Is it politics or something or just coincedence that seems to be making the cruiserweight div. very slow in developing? Maybe it is just me
there are some excellent matches to be made in the cruiser division, don't know what all the hold ups are , maybe its down to the promoters, or could be the fighters.
Not sure whats happening with Nelson, his last fight has been postponed a couple of times and he seems to be moving into TV work quite well, so maybe he might have just one or two fights left in him.
Thompson looks headed to South Africa last i heard , for a remetch with Rothmann, its a good payday for Carl but not a match i can see him winning.
Mormeck should have a defense later on in the year, but i don't see it being a difficult one.
Cruiser is too close to heavyweight to have big names stay in it for too long. Look at Gomez or Jirov, even Toney. They see they're a few good meals away from quadrupling their paychecks to fight fat blokes who can't put more than two punches together, it's not that hard a decision to make...
Unfortunately, natural size is a factor. However, I really like cruiserweight. All the excitement of the big guys but with boxers who hopefully have had to train hard and make weight. But for the last few years there's been Roy Jones on one side and heavyweight cash on the other, so the bigger guys who can put on or lose a few pounds more easily than the smaller fellers haven't wanted to sit as the poor relation sandwiched between two glory divisions.
The irritating thing is that you've got guys like Tiozzo who, when he was at cruiser, many Americans (the people who do, after all, drive the sport) had either not heard of or didn't have an opinion of. He comes down to light-heavy, wins a title, and is now being talked about as a viable opponent for Tarver who is held in no small regard.
Who the hell had heard of Mormeck before he beat Braithwaite? Again, it's all about American activity. We're slightly spoiled in Europe because we have a large number of cruisers (comparatively) because there isn't the heavyweight cash being dangled in front of them. On the flip side of that is, without American interest, there is less pressure to make big matches at the weight.
exactly, i was constantly being laughed at when talking on the current scene about Mormeck when he had got the WBA belt and nobody would give me any credit and people kept saying Mormeck was a nobody until he beat the crap out of Big Truck, whom everyone thought was going to beat Mormeck easily...

Do you know if he's after O'Neil, maybe not for his next fight, but just to tie loose ends up and an extra dose of glory?
