Oliveira grabs the back of his head, at first it looks as if he might have pulled a neck muscle, until he starts grabbing at his eye as well.

Emanuel Augustus clearly seeing something wrong with Ray, puts himself at risk and stops throwing punches, and when the doctor lets the fight go on, only throws mild body punches because he doesn't want to hurt Ray.

I hope Ray is ok, it seems as if he suffered a blood clot in the back of his head, and lost the vision of his right eye. Perhaps permanently, or maybe worse yet. I hope everything comes out ok for Ray... :(

**Update** Ray is released from the hospital and his people have said he is now retired from boxing.

Sounds like he showed a lot of class there, hopefully Ray will be OK 8)

I've read the thread on the current scene and it sounds like the fight doctor was useless

I'm not so sure about that, it was one of those situations where an experienced referee was more use than a doctor to be honest. But check out the link and come to your own conclusion.

Nice link (again), Tantum.

To be honest I didn't like the sound of this matchup in the first place, and wasn't surprised to see the TKO beside the L on Ray's record when the result came through. Very sad to see he got hurt.

Very disturbing footage. That doc's conduct really has to be called into question. The questions he asked were crap and he showed little knowledge of Oliveira's fighting history, particularly the disgrace against Ricky Hatton - another one that never should have happened. In addition to already being shot there, he was also weight drained and roughed up bad (similar to Tsyzu), as well as being knocked out late (the worst time to get knocked out).

As for this Augustus fight - he still had his wits about him and was mentally with it, it was his spine or something that was hurting him. That area behind the head/upper neck is a very dangerous spot to get hurt in (wasn't impressed with Ali Nuumbembe's full blooded rabbit punch after the stoppage last night either), there's a lot of important nerves there that can easily cripple/blind you. I'm not a doctor but surely he should have asked Ray to touch his toes or rotate his head in a circle or something?

You couldn't fault the doctor. He asked three questions, as I recall. "Where are you?" "How many fingers am I holding up?" And the clincher, which I believe convinced the doc that Oliveira was good to go: "What day is it today?" Most folks probably would have answered "Friday." But Oliveira said," The 8th."

I'm glad the reports say Ray's ok. But they do not clarify what was wrong, as clearly something was.

Ric, I see what you're saying - yes, the questions were good, but were they relevant? In my view it looked to be a motor problem rather than a cognitive one.

At least he seems to be okay now, which is the main thing...

Ray is a true warrior, one of the toughest guys of recent years , and vastly underappeciated.

i hope he'll be alright and that he retires after this.

Moments ago, Fightnews.com had a chance to speak with "Sucra" Ray Oliveira's promoter, CES president Jimmy Burchfield to get an update on his condition. Burchfield stated, "Well thank God at about 2:35am this morning he was released from the Portsmouth Hospital. He left the hospital on his own two feet. They did a complete battery of tests including a CAT scan of his head. He suffered a pinched nerve in his neck and thankfully everything else turned out to be ok." In regards to Oliveira's future, Burchfield said, "Ray is a true warrior and I just hope at this point that after a week or so of rest, that I am going to recommend to Ray Oliveira very, very seriously that boxing is over for him. Hopefully we will take my advice and move on to the second phase of his life. I feel very strongly that I do not want Ray Oliveira to fight anymore." Prior to his last two fights, Ray Oliveira (47-11-2, 22KO's) had never been stopped in a professional bout. His first stoppage came at the hands of now IBF Jr. Welterweight Champion Ricky Hatton, and his second occurred Friday night against veteran Emmanuel Augustus.
