Who's Britains next genuine PPV star?

Post by dbf »

As much as us fans have resented some of the not so worthy recent PPV's, Haye Klitschko was (in principle, maybe not in hindsight) worthy of being on Pay Per View.

Hatton and Haye are the only two brits in recent times that I think have been genuine PPV stars over here. They have generated massive buys. I just can't see who's next.

Maybe Khan if he does land a Mayweather fight or at least unifys against Judah and fights Bradley - but thats not a mega fight. Carl Froch potentially should he beat Ward - but that is a massive ask.

Apart from those two, who in the next few years could become a genuine world class fighter who could demand massive fights and in turn massive PPV's?

I think it needs to be a fighter who forces his way through rather than handed everything on a plate. I don't think people can really get behind a fighter taken on from the Olympics etc as they're fighting in such big arenas and are pretty much untouchable from the start of their careers so they can't build a proper support base

James Degale has the love him/ hate him thing tat makes him intruiging to watch, should his talets take him that far i feel he can become justified PPV depending on the figts he takes (ie not typical Warren WBO stuff) .....

David Price is another possibilitty, as our lot love a good HW....and i see him as the most talented of the Brits even if he hasnt proved it as yet. Should peak by th tail end of of the Wladimir era and everything will be up for grabs then provided he doesnt get set back before hand. Should work up a mass liverpool fanbase beforehand if possible though.

if a kid from england wins a gold next year at the olympics and is very likeable he could be the next ppv star, apart from that we have khan and froch at the top, haye and degale on the slide, and people like groves gavin barker and brook on the verge. but a superstar needs to go to another level !

It is going to be interesting when you look at it. I do feel for whatever is left of his career Carl Froch as earnt his PPV opportunities when you consider his record and the quality of opposition that he has recently been facing and I reckon he will beat Andre Ward and it makes sense to go for him as he is in a division that is at the moment utterly stacked with talent a lot of very interesting matchups can be made as Froch wants to have a rematch with Mikkel Kessler to avenge that blot that he currently has on his slate, and then he may want Lucian Bute or Kelly Pavlik before going up to Light-Heavyweight.

I agree with the idea that James DeGale would make great Pay Per View he because the Olympic Gold Medal, the flashy confident/arrogant personality that generates a love/hate thing that probably makes you want to see whoever he is fighting knock him out, and there could always still be the prospect of a rematch down the line with George Groves who also has a style that would make good Pay-Per-View sales figures. If he gets past Kevin Mitchell you could also add in the equation John Murray, he is young on the verge of world title contention has an exciting all action style that would also generate considerable interest and plus Manchester needs to have a fighter to get behind now that Ricky Hatton has confirmed the worse kept secret in boxing, and also Nathan Cleverly as he is probably the heir to Joe Calzaghe and has some potentially interesting match ups at Light-Heavyweight down the line.

As for DeGale being on the slide, it is only one defeat it is a setback but I do not believe it is damaging as everyone makes it out to be. He is still young and there is plenty of time for him to get back into contention for domestic honours and after that who knows. The talent is still there he just needs to rebuild his confidence.

Do you not think they'd just go down the same path as DeGale, Khan & Harrison?

DeGale was asking for a £2m contract when he turned over, imagine what a gold medallist from London will want

If the winner of Chisora-Fury does the job in spectacular fashion then I think he can become PPV as he moves onto the world stage.

No-one - hatton was a freak, every other ppv star has been a product of terrestrial tv

Not one fighter I'd pay three times to see (licence, subscription plus ppv)

I definitely think Froch will be on PPV at some point. Sky are really plugging him. But the fact that there isn't a standout PPV star could be a good thing, as we might get good PPV bills stacked with 3 or 4 quality match-ups.

How can you possibly reason that Kell Brook can become a PPV star, mate? If you asked 1000 people in the street today: "who is Kell Brook?". Only a loose handful would know he was a boxer. Most would either shrug their shoulders or say "that lass with the nice chebs".
If you asked a 1000 people in the street 2 years ago who David Haye was, only a handful would know he was a boxer.

If you win World titles against good opposition in impressive fashion then your stock quickly rises

I see no reason in the current climate why I should pay SKY extra money to watch boxing. I only subscribed to SKY in order to watch boxing and pay well over £70 a month for this priviledge. Why should I then pay £15 more to watch the likes of the recent PPV's that have been more akin to glorified celebrity boxing and just as unfulfilling.

I'd rather watch the likes of Edwards v Edwards give their all than watch some pampered "golden boy" who thinks they have a right to my hard earned cash.

It was more to say that winning titles against good opposition and in impressive fashion isn't necessarily enough to get your name out to the man in the street

Potentially, but it all hinges on the worlds and the Olympics and we're looking at 2017 before he could be PPV worthy - and theres absolutely no way of telling how he will fair as a pro.

Kell Brook could be a good shout actually, he's got style and skill and comes across well. Maybe in a couple of years time he could be massive. But WW is a tough division.

My answer to the original question is I hope there are none, and the boxers can make their money through endorsements and we don't have to pay for events.

As for Froch, I'm sure Sky will be looking at the ratings of his fight with Johnson very closely before making him a PPV star. Sadly its not just about a fighters record.... existing TV ratings will be a huge factor.

Nobody. Khan and Froch have both not been too sucessful on PPV and i seriously doubt Haye will box again. If he does, everyone i know wont be paying to watch it! DeGale-Groves was a big event but had a great back story, and then, to be truthful, they produced a crap fight. I honestly cant see anyone who justifies at the moment. Froch, yes for us, but he really has not crossed over.
