Ron Lyle

Post by zslayton »

I have seen this guy fight 3 times and he looked like he was an awesome fighter just in the wrong era. I think he would walk thru todays heavyweights. What do you know about him?

I think todays crop of heavyweights would be petrified at the thought of facing Lyle in his prime!

I remember his fight with Foreman, with both fighters down. I felt he had really bad luck because the last time he went down he was in the corner (if I remember correctly) so he couldn't go down immediately but took some more punches instead. I wondered what could have happened otherwise, I think with the fight being close he could still have a chance.

Not from a fan's point of view, he was part of the great 70's heavyweight era. You need great opponents to have great fights, like he did with Foreman and Shavers. Had he been around today no doubt he'd have taken some belts though.

I have to echo others here, if Big Ron Lyle was around today I am sure he would have picked up a belt or two at some point. Lyle was a big, intimidating fighter with a big punch, solid skills and hard jab. Earnie Shavers claims the hardest puncher he ever fought was Ron Lyle. However the ex-convict Lyle could be outsmarted such as against Jerry Quarry and Jimmy Young.

Interestingly Lyle didn't actually make his professional debut until the age of 30, due to his prior prison time, so a lot of his active years were lost to the sport.

Another interesting point about Lyle is that he came back aged 54 to win 4 fights in 1995. Does anybody know what that was all about?

I asked the same question a while back

I think he was hoping for a big money rematch with George Foreman but when he hears through the grapevine that it wasn't going to happen he hung his gloves up again.

Any man who could bounce a prime Foreman off the floor, outbox Ali for 10 rds, and come off the floor to ice Earnie Shavers would obviously be running the show in todays pathetic division.

Not only was Lyle built like an ape and could punch with the force of a freight train, he could go 12 rds withotu huffing 7 puffing and also had solid basic skills.

Luckily for Lyle there's nobody around today with the slick skills of a Jimmy Young or Jerry Quarry to beat him up. (dont anyone dare compare a clown like Byrd to those guys)
