Has the next 'Mike Tyson' been born yet?
This should be in future scene, but as no catagory for that it will have to go here. Anyway, do you think there is a young lad out there somewhere thats maybe 6 or 7 and maybe just going to a gym and watching the lads spar etc, and is the next Mike Tyson waiting to happen. I for on cannot wait until we have a heavyweight boxer who scares the shit out of everyone and cleans up the alphabet titles one by one and reunites the heavyweight scene by the time he is 21. Do you think this will happen again? And do you think there is a young lad out there that is being groomed for heavyweight stardom?
Re: Has the next 'Mike Tyson' been born yet?
The problem is it needs to be several good fighters fighting at HW for there to be one good champion.
Even if theres another Tyson the challengers arent there anymore its a bloody shame

Most of Tyson's opposition wasn't great.Spiker wrote:The problem is it needs to be several good fighters fighting at HW for there to be one good champion.

I honestly believe Mike Perez is the future. He's got people avoiding him already

Re: Has the next 'Mike Tyson' been born yet?
I certainly hope someone comes along. But cleaned up by 21? I doubt it.
Re: Has the next 'Mike Tyson' been born yet?
I didn't think Perez looked that great at Prizefighter. People normally overrate what that tournament means. Didn't have much accuracy or composure.
Re: Has the next 'Mike Tyson' been born yet?
i dunno if Perez has the motivation to become a full-on world class champion

Not fantastic no. But better than today. Most were in fighting shapeScottrf wrote:Most of Tyson's opposition wasn't great.Spiker wrote:The problem is it needs to be several good fighters fighting at HW for there to be one good champion.

I agree with Perez. He has the best potential for me. Would like to see if he steps up soon and starts fighting bigger names.Josh1111 wrote:carlbcfc wrote:http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?cat=bo ... _id=438253

None of the British lads will fight him though as he has nothing to bring to the table. He needs to fight some big American names to raise his profilestevek3lly wrote:I agree with Perez. im not too impressed with Perez yet based on the prizefighter , lets be honest , he didnt beat any potential world level fighters that night , hes too small for starters in todays heavyweight division and imo lacks the explosiveness in speed or power that david haye has and he wasnt able to dominate the division either , i dont yet know of a heavyweight with an entertaining tyson style or anything remotely near it , all the next dominant heavies will be in a similar vein to the klitschko's imo .
Re: Has the next 'Mike Tyson' been born yet?
Sam Peters aint that big and he managed to get to Wlad (fair enough, it was a long time ago). Perez is a very good fighter but i agree, he's still to be tested against world level fighters.damianhucker1 wrote:im not too impressed with Perez yet based on the prizefighter , lets be honest , he didnt beat any potential world level fighters that night , hes too small for starters in todays heavyweight division and imo lacks the explosiveness in speed or power that david haye has and he wasnt able to dominate the division either , i dont yet know of a heavyweight with an entertaining tyson style or anything remotely near it , all the next dominant heavies will be in a similar vein to the klitschko's imo .
Plus this thread is about the next Mike Tyson, i think he's the closest thing out there

Well in that case if perez is the closest thing out there to Iron Mike then the heavyweight division really is in a sad state of affairs .Josh1111 wrote:Sam Peters aint that big and he managed to get to Wlad (fair enough, it was a long time ago). I think you've just stated the obvious mate. The heavyweight scene is possibly the worst it's been for 40-50 yearsdamianhucker1 wrote:Well in that case if perez is the closest thing out there to Iron Mike then the heavyweight division really is in a sad state of affairs .Josh1111 wrote:Sam Peters aint that big and he managed to get to Wlad (fair enough, it was a long time ago). Re: Has the next 'Mike Tyson' been born yet?
i usually like to think its due to everyone holding past fighters in a higher regard nd that the heavies arent as bad as people think , and while i do think that is the case and that the domination of the klits make it seem weaker , to compare Perez to Tyson really puts a downer on things for me , i want to be excited by the Heavyweights like i was as a teen in the mid 90s , now i know that it wasnt the golden era then but i was excited by it , it got me interested in boxing in the first place , how id love that to happen again , maybe we would alos attract a lot more fans to the sport , bringing more money and in turn better fights , on paper at least .Josh1111 wrote:I think you've just stated the obvious mate. Perez is not gun-shy like Haye, that is the difference between the two. I would love to see Haye vs Perez in fact. Perez v Rogan/McDermot/Sexton would be a good next step for me before taking on either Chisora/Fury/Price.
or there is always Audley Harrison
Tyson was 5 10" when Tuckers was 6 5"
Perez is 6 0"

Audley has stated on Twitter as he brings nothing to the table so its a nothing fight for him, lose lose. He wants the winner of Chisora vs Fury, doubt he'll get it though as Price is fighting McDermott in an eliminator

Agree mate, we need the HW division to take off again.damianhucker1 wrote:i usually like to think its due to everyone holding past fighters in a higher regard nd that the heavies arent as bad as people think , and while i do think that is the case and that the domination of the klits make it seem weaker , to compare Perez to Tyson really puts a downer on things for me , i want to be excited by the Heavyweights like i was as a teen in the mid 90s , now i know that it wasnt the golden era then but i was excited by it , it got me interested in boxing in the first place , how id love that to happen again , maybe we would alos attract a lot more fans to the sport , bringing more money and in turn better fights , on paper at least .Josh1111 wrote:I think you've just stated the obvious mate. The only thing i will say, i think the lower weight divisions are stronger and more competitive than ever which is drawing alot of fans in. I think we've become that used to the HW's being poor we've all got behind the smaller guys

Re: Has the next 'Mike Tyson' been born yet?
The opposition he beat I mean. Obviously Holyfield/Lewis were a step above, but Tysons best 10 wins vs the divisional top 10 now. Wouldn't say miles apart. That's from feeling though, not sitting down and comparing.mrbassie wrote:are you kidding?Scottrf wrote:Barely.jamesmcdonnell wrote: It was better that the current faeces around.

One absolute certainty with heavyweight boxing is that a true star will come along eventually.
Then we will all see why it is called the richest prize in sport! Imagine Ali or Tyson fighting today? They would earn 50m a fight and have sponsorship deals that make Tiger Woods' deals look like paper round money.

Re: Has the next 'Mike Tyson' been born yet?
In response to Tyson's early opponents, there were a few who stood up and gave it a go, Mike Jameson, Steve Zouski come to mind. Don't get me wrong they were hopelessly outclassed but at least they dug in. They certainly gave a better acount of themselves than some of the tubs of lard around today. However there were quite a few stiffs on Tyson's early record too.
What we need today is a bout 10/15 journeyman heavyweights who are happy to give it a go and not go down at the first whiff of a jab, give the younger guys something to think about.
How David Haye must have wished he could have been tested by a James 'Quick' Tillis or a Bonecrusher Smith over a few rounds...
