Wilt Chamberlain vs. Muhammad Ali 1967

Post by Grimm »

Who wins this matchup?

Wilt Chamberlain 7'1" 275 lbs reach 100?"

Muhammad Ali 6'3" 210 lbs reach 80"

Who wins this ridiculous match up that wasn't even close to happening.

Muhammad Ali has never fought anyone of this size and strength, nor has there been anyone who boxed of his size and strength.

Wilt Chamberlain has no boxing experience at all.

Note: Sweet Scientist wanted me to make this thread.

That pretty much tells me who would win. :TU:

Now Grimm reverse the question and ask if Ali could beat Wilt in a one on one game of hoops. Would you give Ali a chance in that contest, because Ali was such a great fighter?

Wilt would have been put out quicker as Mark Gastinaeu if he went against Ali...come to think of it, I don't think Wilt would have beat someone like Boone Kirkman, much less Ali!

I think you're just trolling. If not, then you know nothing about boxing. I don't believe what you said in the other thread about having experience boxing, especially since you always talk about it only in third person and theoretical terms even when talking about your own supposed experience.

Anyway, I reccomend for everyone to ignore your posts from now on, I know I will. :TU:

Putting emphasis on size????????.......maybe a little.

But Wilt Chamberlains height and reach are not why I would pick him, but simply because he was Wilt Chamberlain.

He could do just about everything.

I think ringsider put it in real good prespective...would Ali stand a chance beating Wilt one-on-one in basketball and that's about the chance that Wilt would have against Ali in boxing!

The size thing was not the issue.

It was the good at everything part along with the size that would make me pick him.

Well, look how awesome Shaq is and how agile...did you see how he punched in an on-court fight, it made Josh Cobb look like boxing stylist...Wilt would have presented much of the same!

See that is where it differs.

I would not pick any giant to be a great boxer.

But Chamberlain was an exceptional athlete.

Shaq is very clumsy not even close to agile, Chamberlain on the other hand is the polar opposite.

Can't believe this discussion is taking place. Someone is pulling someone else's chain me thinks :D

6'3 and 225 is in my opinion the optimum for HW's. Anything above that and they start to suffer for a few reasons. Skill, stamina, punch resistance, co-ordination. There's always a couple of exceptions, however

What about Vitali Klitschko?
What about him, he's not one of the exceptions :D . He's rather robotic and there's nobody out there currently to test him. A prime Lewis wipes the floor with him :TU:

A prime Lewis had been boxing probably 20+ years, Wilt boxed 0+ years!

My guess is a decent welterweight would have beaten Wilt. There's nothing more hilarious than watching basketball players, footballers, or whoever flaining away at one another when things get heated in a game. They simply cannot fight.

Besides the training regime of a top athlete is not the same as the training regime for a fighter.

I seriously think that we should look at the issue of posters putting up ridiculous threads like this and consider throwing them out of the forum or else confining them to the 'Current scene'... this is supposed to be a serious boxing forum!.....

/Agree

Incidentally, along with what Ezzard said about basketball and football players not knowing how to fight, I think great big guys like that usually in fact don't have to fight very much in life, because growing up nobody wants to mess with them, and they end up having less fighting ability than even many "average" people who grow up fighting with other kids a lot. But because nobody wants to mess with them, and they can beat the average man's ass without trying, they think they are badass fighters anyway (see Shaq vs. Charles Barkley where Shaq is the example of what I'm talking about).

Total missmatch

Ali would destroy Wilt. Wilt was a great athlete but Ali was one of the greatest Heavyweight Boxers ever!!!!

Putting Wilt in with a Heavyweight clubfighter is one thing, putting him in the ring with Ali would have been cruel.
