Solis is picking up at +91 maybe? But how does Michel Lopez figure in this tournament, when does he fight?

Lopez and Solis

Post by Venceremos »

Based in his international background, Cuba has picked Solis as the representative. Also, they send two both Lopez and Solis to Moscow. But, Lopez as substitute, a new kind of participation in the AIBA World Cup.

So will Lopez fight? This seems a little unjust considering he beat Solis in Venezuela. The Cubans are desperate to find a +91 who can win titles again, and to that end they want rid of Lopez, same as they did Rubalcaba. Am I correct?

Does this mean Russia are the best???, better than the mighty Cubans. It's hard to believe. Can somebody tell me if this was the top top Cuban team. I do see a few great names......The feather fight must have been class, Olympic champ beats Fly Olympic champ Gamboa......

Don't forget the World Cup was in Moscow. Had it been in Havana there is little doubt the Cubans would have won. But the fact is the cubans are a lot weaker than last year. Kindelan and Aragon are retired and the changes of weights of Gamboa and Solis have weakened their team.
It will be interesting to see if the russians can hold this position at the World Championships. Remember before the Olympics many thought the russians would beat the cubans, specially after their total dominance at the European championships in Pula.

The home teams always seem to do better in competition, maybe from the cheering of fans or something like that. The few close decisions for the russians may have been a close victory for a cuban. If you look at the last world cup, the kazakh team won some close decisions.

Like all sports the local team usually gets a few calls in their favor. But I feel the Russian team is very strong, probably second to the Cubans. Tishenko is a young tough kid with skills, hard for me to see Gamboa beating him at featherweight.

Some of the Cubans are new to the elite level, so by Olympic time I feel they will be up to their best level.

Don't forget the Russians have also lost their share of experienced and important boxers: Maletin, Saitov and Gaiderbekov! :box:

Yes, that's true. Both teams are weaker than last year. That's normal after an olympic cycle. Last year the cubans were better, this year the russians seem to be better. Over the last 30 years, the cubans have dominated, sometimes without opposition and a few times the russians (and USA in 1976) have been slightly better.
