Post by mahatma »

im still enjoying training in my forties take it a lot less for granted than i did in my youth, still enjoying getting a sweat on, hitting the heavybag and doing a few weights but the runs have died a death as ive got older.
still love the feeling of well being after ive trained!

i am over 40 now and still train but no where near as hard as i did 3 years back as the body just cant take it. I cant run anymore as it gives groin problems /shin splints so replaced that with swimming which i am finding quite good. Hitting the heavy bags these days really is a no no as i get elbow problems but still use a double end bag, it is amazing as i was rarely injuryed through out my life but as soon as got to near 40 my body just said "slow the fuk down" and told me this by making me hurt all over :(
its a bitch isnt it. i was playing some of the best football i had ever played, was faster than ever from 30 right up to 35..then my body started losing its endurance capabilities, recovery was way slower..and then i ruptured my right achilles during a sprint..am recovered now but endurance and recovery are decreasing rapidly :verysad:

No longer go to the gym. No longer have the bag hanging in garage either. Torn both rotator cuffs, so shoulders don't appreciate the jarring of bag work.
My new exercise is cycling nowadays. Enter both mountain bike and road biking enduro/sportive type events. Probably fitter now at 40 than i have ever been.

Shame you don't live over the water Ian you could have trained at
Mine
yeah i know, I might try Ventnor club over here, as they are a decent bunch. But would like one of the clubs here to start a white collar type thing , then at least i wouldn't feel in the way when training.
I do cycle to work and have started trying to run again, but knee and back are a bit dodgy.
Be nice to work out on bags and pads again.

I am 53, just started back this week after a year off training, just lifting light weights at moment till I get fitter, then might go to local boxing gym, other wise, just stick to weights and a bit of cardio,

I mainly train MMA. I'll be 35 in less than a month and I'm already starting to feel my body slowing, and being prone to more injuries.
Never been able to run long distances with slightly dodgy knees and suffer from shin splints.
Like you, cycling is my choice for aerobic exercise.

You'd have hoped that by their late 50s they would have discovered there's more to life...

Hit 40 in two months' time but still training five times a week on average - mostly crossfit. Started MMA last year but suffered a rotator cuff tear that developed into shoulder impingement - has taken six months to completely recover, which tells you something, but there's no quit in this dog yet :TU:
As mercman said, nutrition is something that takes on increasing importance in terms of controlling weight and aiding recovery time etc.

Wow, a lot of moaning old men in here!! lol :OhYes:

I boxed amateur for years and packed it up at 34 and took up weight training. Last Sunday I was placed third in the NPA South West championships (Natural Bodybuilding) in the Lightweight category. I also qualified for the British Finals later this year.

I am 37 years old and my usual routine is 5am - hour cardio. 6.30am - one hour weights. 6pm - one hour cardio.

I also weigh all my food, diet correctly, monitor every gram I eat and I do not get aches or pains at all. It is all bulls**t and excuses. Look after your body and follow a good diet and supplementation and you will be fine.

Oh, by the way, Eric, how long do the piccies and DVD take to come through? I have seen some of the official ones you did and they kick ass!!!

Simply isn't true fella - the approach you're taking is undoubtedly solid in terms of 'prehab', but you're undoubtedly more susceptible to injury as you get older and recovery time is also a big factor.
