Teddy Atlas, top notch no bullshit analyst, Friday Night Fights terrific entertainment..Randyman wrote:Nice photo Charlie, I have always liked Teddy as a trainer and a commentator. You're in good company.CNorkusJr wrote:Here you go Rick.

At a Ring 8 meeting just a couple of months ago.
Paul will be flying out with his family to the HOF dinner next year.
This photo was taken just a month or two after Vinny fought Thomas adamek on HBO ,I believe. Adamek by KO. Vinny is still training and might have a fight sceduled soon.
Vinny also sits on the Ring 8 trustee Bd and attends meeting regularly.
Teddy Atlas this night was special guest speaker talking about training habits of fighters he had, dished some dirt on the various ABC's title belts and their orgs, and the state of boxing today from a TV analyst point of view. Great and informative.

Jeri and I will be up there this weekend packing and putting stuff in storage and preparing for the move. We'll be leaving i about an hour. Looking forward to having her back with us on a regular basis.
Have a safe trip, Randy.

Re: Classic American West Coast Boxing
I like Teddy Atlas, and I appreciate him carrying on a concept that was originated by Sean O'Grady back in the 80's, of using stand-up demonstration of boxing & punching techniques. Like Sean, Teddy also tells of things a fighter does in the gym. Only a fighter or pro-active trainer can do that. I know he's opinionated and that does not bother me at all. He's earned his opinion, regardless of whether I agree or not.Cholo wrote:Teddy Atlas, top notch no bullshit analyst, Friday Night Fights terrific entertainment..Randyman wrote:Nice photo Charlie, I have always liked Teddy as a trainer and a commentator. Tom . . . After seven rounds with Manuel, Remy was kinda like a race car with flat tires.
As he tried to catch his breath, he refused to quit, "I'm getting my second wind," he said.
He tore into Manuel like a demon posessed in the 8th, but he was a one bite wonder, one intimidating bite, then he swallowed.
I saw his skin take on a green tone around his neck, and after the 8th, he took a breather with a silly smile on his face.
That's how Patterson knew he had Johansson, Ingo smiled at Floyd after being clipped with a good shot.
D'Amato taught Floyd that only two kinds of boxers will smile in the ring, one who is silly, or one that is hurt. Ingo wasn't silly, and neither is Remy.
In the 9th & final round, the Norwegian back-peddaled, not biting into anything. I was waiting for a bus boy to walk by and grab the plate, he was done.
Randy should prove a great advisor to Team Tom.

Working the table of a Manuel's Special challenger requires experience.
An experienced "table man" knows what to watch out for, signs that his "eater" is in danger.
Manuel is clever, he'll work at an opponent's pace until the half-way point, then the body damage begins to take it's toll.
Manuel has whipped all styles & strategies. He isn't undefeated, and he was embarrassed at least once.
However, only hall-of-fame eaters get the best of a Manuel's Special, and I only know of one to date.
I've noticed one tell tale sign of impending doom is seeing the front of a shirt pop it's buttons.
During the fifth round, Remy's shirt began to stretch, the buttons strained to hold the front closed.
About the time a challenger pushs back to "take a little breather" he is done. Throw in the napkin.
After that, the best he'll do is push the food around the plate, searching for something that might slide down easier than the big cut of meat.
Suddenly the body starts to revolt, betrayed by the invasion of unfamiliar food. I'll stop here, it's not a pretty site.

His last match as an unbeaten fighter . . .kikibalt wrote:
I wasn't at this card, but I saw the MandoRamos-Len Kesey match on TV, and I remember that a hook to the gut ended the fight.
Ramos nailed him right in the liver and Kesey doubled up and sank to the canvas. Ref Joey Olmos stopped it.
A couple weeks later Mando would suffer his first loss, losing a close ten rounder to Suh Kang Il.

"Too Sweet" . . .
This was Mando Ramos' first "off TV" ten rounder. You could no longer watch Mando Ramos fight on TV from the Olympic.
If you wanted to see the "Boy Wonder", you had to buy a ticket from here on.
TV viewers were treated to a great undercard however, and in the TV ten we saw a L.A. favorite club fighter, "Too Sweet" Frankie Jennings.
Jennings was exciting, and he really excited in this match.
Jennings never went far, and after retiring tried his hand at training boxers, went in and out of jail on drug charges, pimping.
Frankie Jennings survived on the streets after boxing, sometimes living with a sister in South Central L.A., he suffered the early stages of dementia.
He finally passed away in 2008.

In their first fight, Jerry was cornered, unloaded a two punch combo that sent Scrap Iron spinning across the ring to the otherside where he hit the floor and couldn't get up. In the second fight (above), the iron chinned Johnson stayed on his feet and gave Jerry a good go for ten rounds. LA enjoyed Scrap Iron Johnson who fought everybody tough regardless of their awesome power. Only Jerry put him out during his career but he couldn't do it twice. Neither could the likes of Joe Frazier or Sonny Liston. Scrap is still around LA, Mando Ramos used to see him occasionally before Mando passed.

Women's Soccer . . .
The World Cup - USA vs. Japan.
The women's soccer team is the best the USA has ever had, they whipped Brazil, and France.
For the first time ever they are playing for the World Cup today, and for the first time I am anxiously awaiting the start of a soccer game.
Half time: 0-0

Charlie, Dwight Qawi was voted into the WBHOF last year but the annual event was not held, and the award not presented.
However, Qawi is a Hall of Famer, eventually he'll receive an official induction.
