to be honest as much as i like john he was taylor made for mitchell, look at both their styles mitchell is a clever boxer who can move around when he wants to and can fight when he needs to. now look at john murrays style he relies ongrinding fighters down then letting his strength take over, with mitchell he couldnt do this cause kevin was flash and has a lot of tools to his game. like i say i like john murray he is a genuine nice guy but i had mitchell winning from when the fight was made. murray is a slower version of prescott,he was looking for the right hand too much walking mitchell down instead of being smart and getting on his toes and cutting the ring down but then this wouldnt be john murray. well done kevin, john murray will be back.

Cracking performance from Mitchell last night and he got the stoppage too! Murray's face was an absolute mess, I bet he's feeling it this morning. Well done to both of the lads because they put on a belting fight. I fancied Mitchell at odds of 5/4 beforehand but didn't think he'd stop John.

What now for Mitchell? A possible WBA title fight against Rios? A possible re-match against Katsidis is hopefully down the line as well. If Kevin gets himself 'right' again, we could see some fantastic matches coming our way. Last night I think he's shown, he's World Class. I bet he feels like he's just won £162 million this morning...

Fair play to Mitchell. I personally thought Murray would of won but there you go. Murray did what he always does and just comes forward which I think played into Mitchells hands. As other people have said Murray aint been in with a banger like Mitchell and it obviously showed. He wasnt going to walk through punches like that all night and it showed in the seventh round. After that I knew Mitchell would stop him in the eighth. Murrays face was a mess which obviously showed the punishment he was taking throught the fight. Murray will come again.

I was surprised by that fight, didn`t think Mitchell would be able to live with Murray`s pressure. Great performance from Mitchell though, he can box and trench it out, top stuff. Well done to him.

There is a touch of the Eastenders nightmare about the guy though, but I shouldn`t let that put me off though, eh?

I had Murray 1 up at the time of the stoppage. I actually thought it was one of his best performances, he was working the jab, getting Mitchell against 'the ropes and throwing nice strong combinations. His defence is the massive problem though, Mitchell couldn't miss with that left uppercut. Another thing that lost him the fight is he can only fight one way when his legs went he didn't know what to do and just continued walking forward into shots. He has a massive heart but if he's going to get back into Euro/World level he needs to get his defence sorted.

I'm assuming somewhere with KingG, concocting a story on how Murray was actually on top at the time of the stoppage & that their bloke didn't block punches with his face all night long.

Not to take away from mitchell win but did anyone else think Murray looked and boxed terrible?
I noticed his legs on the way to the ring they looked heavy and unsteady
He was slow, used his head and why was he keep turning southpaw and only throw lead rights in orthadox? It was a shocking performance I wonder if he's actually shot?
What do you lot think of his fight and legs!!!

Murray has boxed like that many times - it's nothing new.

It's just he's always found a way to win before. It went pretty much as I thought, except I thought Murray would come on strong later and get the better of it...but Mitchell was so good he didn't even get that chance.

As I said though, weird saying that as I had it even at the time of the stoppage. One of those times where one's card doesn't really match the general picture.

Loved that fight. Great performance from Mitchell (post 2 or 3 rounds). I hope Mitchell uses this to springboard on from here, get active and proper focused on the sport. Well done Kevin Mitchell!

John Murray's face first style was always going to stop him from reaching top level. Nine years and he gets his first proper fight, and that against a guy who fell way short in a WBO title bid.

I picked Mitchell to KO Murray and (for once) was right.

Anyone notice how in the 7th round as they went back and sat in the corner, Joe Gallagher's facial expression/manner said he pretty much knew Murray was gone. Murray sat down and Joe's face just dropped, he knew Murray was done, you could see he was gutted, I felt pretty gutted in that moment as I have been a Murray fan for quite a few years. I honestly thought they might pull him out in the corner at that point.

But sadly as has been said, that gung-ho 'rushing in' approach was only gona get him so far and this was the night it fell apart.

Murray I feel, is one of those fighters with a cast iron chin and when he starts staggering its pretty much game over. Something like Margarito.

Awesome display from Mitchell, I never gave him any chance at all. I am happy to say I was well wrong..

Feel gutted for Murray though, he just didn't have the tools for the job.

I honestly think Murray is on the slippery slope to being shot. I know that seems very reactionary, but I've been worried about the amount of punches he takes for a while and I think last night could be the start of the end.

I can't recall another boxer off the top of my head who has absolutely zero head movement over the whole 12 rounds. I said on another thread you could balance an apple on his head and it wouldn't fall off, and against a real elite fighter I'd be frightened for his safety - his face was a terrible mess last night for a fight that only went 7 full rounds for which he was on the front foot for most of it. He seems to really plod forward in a straight line and even his punches seem quite clumsy and slow. Have never seen in him what others do and I don't think he belongs in a conversation for even fringe 'world' stuff. Bravery, strength, and a good chin can only get you so far and once your brain starts struggling there is no coming back. He's a strange one to watch because he has such a high, tight guard but basically has no defense when punches are coming in.

in complete agreement. His accuracy on his power shots is superb!!! im so pleased he won this fight. I had him winning it on points, but inside the distance was fantastic and a real big confidence booster.

This is bollocks. I wrote that Rhodes placed some terrific body shots in his win over Moore so you can't really tar me with that brush. I gave both sides of the story of that fight, quoting Dave Coldwell on the Rhodes strategy and Moore's comments that the weight making was hard but that he fought a terrific fighter.

Mitchell fought a great, smart fight and was a deserved winner and my take on the fight reads a lot differently than the one you've presented for me on my behalf.
Don't worry G, I was thinking of Autobarn when I added my emoticons, but even then I only mean it in a light-hearted manner - just remember him saying Mitchell was a backward step for Murray etc. We all get 'em wrong on occasion :TU:

Apology due from me. Was meant in a far more light-hearted manner than it came across. I can see how that looks out of order.

Sorry.

Fair play to Mitchell proved a lot of people wrong. Didn't expect him to have the mental strength. Didn't like him as a fella before the fight as thought he was a cockney wide boy. After his celebration and interview he really has turned my opinion of him around. Dunno if I agree with all the kissing tho.
