Frankie Gavin
Frankie Gavin
Don't think the guy is going to be a World Champion. May have all the talent in the World and may have been a great amateur but I don't see anything there personally. Don't know what it is - weight, lack of dedication, lack of hunger but I don't see him going far. Shame because he must have something to have become a World Champion at amateur level.
Re: Frankie Gavin
Something needs to change but I won't write him off just yet.

Re: Frankie Gavin
What i see of the Gavin-Woodhouse fight Curtis deserves the plaudits&McGuigan was spot on what he said about him&if he cant knuckle down under Arnie perhaps he needs a change&a new trainer(thats no slate at Arnie)unless he just wont listen to anyone&think he knows best...
As you said world champion, never in my eyes...

Re: Frankie Gavin
Yep - good fighter when close with the amateur style but keep him at distance and he is hopeless
Re: Frankie Gavin
He needs a new trainer arnie is more like a mate than trainer
Re: Frankie Gavin
he needs to drop down to light welter, sort his weight out and sort his head out then he'll be back on track again. Maybe a change of trainer would assist too. What does Farnell have in his man bag anyway? He's always wearing it.
Re: Frankie Gavin
Over-rated for me. Powderpuff puncher and needs to come back down to earth and do some serious grafting or he's gona come a cropper real soon.
Re: Frankie Gavin
Gavin is going to become undone very soon. I'm not seeing anything that suggests Gavin will be a world champion. Maybe he needs a new trainer & new start?

Re: Frankie Gavin
Really pleased for Curtis,as he is definitely the moral victor in this fight, but for Gavin this really should serve as a wake-up call before it"s too late.Warren is not dumb and must be aware of the implications regarding Gavin wasting his talent through laziness.Maybe Frankie just has character flaws regarding discipline and presumes that just talent will be enough?

Re: Frankie Gavin
his talent and skill are so obvious - maybe he's been given too easy a ride with his fights? Perhaps he needs to get sparked by a decent welterweight to make him realise that at some point he's going to have to work to win a fight. His talent is getting him through, but he doesn't look in condition for someone of his age (compare him to how, say Mosley and Pacquiao looked before their fight and Mosley is THIRTY NINE!!!!) and whilst he has the gears to pick quality shots seemingly at will, they're not spiteful or hurtful.
Someone needs to get through to him that he has to change his ways or his talent will come to nothing

i'm not writing the guy off just yet.
clearly has talent to burn but just needs a kick up the arse with regards to his diet/weight making.

Re: Frankie Gavin
lurked on this forum for years, finally got round to making a post
cant see why people rate gavin so highly, he has been going backwards for a good while now, i fear for him at world level, even european level looks like a hard task at the moment. saying that, well done curtis, hopefully the prats at the weigh in have a bit more respect for you now
gavin needs to step it up though, bullshit pre fight banter, bullshit fight (again), outside brum he couldnt sell a penny never mind a £30 ticket which warren is obv aiming for

I don't think anyone here doubts your talent but there's a few (including me) that think you can do light welter with a bit of proper guidance.
Good luck anyway pal

Get yourself to America Frankie before its to late.MachoMan09 wrote:Frankie, it's not just your diet that's letting you down. A kid with your talent and potential needs to be sparring genuine world class fighters on a regular basis (ideally all through camp). If you're not doing this, Frank, Dean and Anthony should, in my view, make it happen ASAP. You've got to be challenged. If you're just going through the motions, your talent will be wasted. You need to drive your career forward. Well my opinion of the fight was firstly I didn't think curtis would go the distance but he kept pluggin away did himself proud to go all the way to the end, well done curtis,Frankie as so much class that everybodys expectations are high and we alll thought hed do a number on curtis, but I thought frankie was a little out of condition and once he sorts the diet well I think we will see the true franki, Who ever says he needs a new trainer are wrong,Arni works his socks off in that gym does a fantastic job and is a top trainer, but well done curtis and franki hope uv settled the aruments

Re: Frankie Gavin
Terry,
Is that acceptable though ?
Out of condition and weight issues.
That smacks of a fighter showing little dedication, and a lack of respect to the opponent.
When he steps up ....... get ready because if this carries on he will get totally exposed.
This is all about the fighter, not the trainer.
Laying blame at a trainer's doorstep would just be a cop out, and I'm pleased he's at least backed Arnie.
Gavin, as our one and only amateur World Champion should be a leading light in boxing, and setting examples to the amateurs hoping to follow in his footsteps.
At the moment he's falling short.

Re: Frankie Gavin
fair play to Frankie for answering the critics without resorting to anger or abuse, but Curtis was the smaller man and after the changes with weight which really already put Frankie at an advantage against an already inferior opponent he's got to be asking himself some serious questions , and those around him must be trying to get through to him
You can just see with his movement and punch-picking, how easily he can land clean etc that he is just a boxer with absolutely buckets of natural talent, and in some ways that's the problem. He's not been taken to deep waters yet by a well conditioned talented boxer - and 11 fights in obviously you wouldn't expect that to be the case when there are such high hopes.
But it seems like there's a danger with Frankie of coasting through everything knowing he's good enough to beat these lesser opponents and it's a bad habit to get into.
It's impossible not to come back to the diet and conditioning sides of things - boxing isn't a long career and to operate at the highest level takes massive sacrifices and dedication. As he steps up if Frankie doesn't make enormous changes his talent with IMHO go to waste, a dreadful shame
You look at the people succeeding at LW and WW like Khan, Bradley, Floyd, Manny, Ortiz etc and they just look like they're cut from a different physical cloth to Frankie on fight night, for a young lad he just doesn't look like an athlete and if he wants to be up with them he's got to do something about that.
Somehow his team have to find a way to put some power and weight into his shots as well as accuracy and speed/quality - although having said that (i know some will argue with this) but Calzaghe was never really hurtful as much as overwhelming and there's no doubt that if Frankie was training like a beast and doing nothing else but living and breathing boxing he could pull out some incredible peformances
Hopefully reading all this, and not completely smashing up a fighter he said he would destroy despite a weight advantage are going to give him the kick up the arse he needs to realise what he COULD get out of this sport if he changes his habits now.
There were times last night (was at the fight with a decent view) where he was doing stuff that no-one else on the bill could do skillwise but it just didn't all add up.
Time to sit down with Arnie and Dean and listen to what it's going to take - and put it into practice
all IMHO of course

REMEMBER " A FORCE " Olympic Heavyweight champion, quoted as Britains next Heavyweight World Champion, what happened to him ? IMO The olympians have flattered to deceive and the 3 of them were all overweight when they started thier journey in pro's, Gavin at Light Welter, Saunders should be at either Welter or Light Middle and Degale should be at Middleweight , reminds me of the new generation of footballers who are given too much money too early, have no hunger and don't deliver. Boxing has always produced world champions from povety, kids that were hungry, determined to suceed no matter what, these ex Am stars have got everything already, money, fame, celeb status before they have started in the pros. Calzaghe was on a program the other day and said that when he turned pro after winning am nat Titles at 3 weight divisions he was given a signing on bonus oe just 3 thousand pounds which turned out to be a loan in the end.twenty six wrote:Terry,

He looks like a pretty big super middle to me.

I am amazed Frankie that you drink diet coke all the time and eat 2 meals a day like beans on toast on stuff. jesus mate, you aint gona get anywhere if you carry on like that, it really is time to sort that side of it out.
We're in 2011 now and at the top level that is gona get you found out. I eat better than that and I'm just a normal person who goes the gym a bit and tries to keep a bit in shape.
It all definitely smacks of someone who is coasting through rather than constantly learning and improving. I don't blame the trainer, but a different trainer might help things. Ultimately though when Frankie goes home, that is when his own personal discipline comes into play and no trainer can be there then.

It would take someone very special to excel in their job having started at the bottom on top pay.
Would an office junior being paid £75K a year ever become the gaffer? Can't see it myself.

Re: Frankie Gavin
I think we can 'stick a fork' in Gavin, if he stays at 147lbs. At 140 I'll stay on the bandwagon as I think skills can still pay the bills
Re: Frankie Gavin
Frankie,
I started a thread ages ago saying you were gonna be the next world champion / force at 140.
So now I'm going to kick your arse, you know I'm not a hater
Basically you probably sat and watch John Murray's record go up in smoke last night and likely saw how Haye's loss has completely exploded from a country of love, to a planet of hate for him. Professional boxing is bloody fickle and it's not a cliché when people say "fail to prepare, prepare to fail".
Boxing success is made of 4 parts.
1. God given ability
2. Promoter
3. Mentality
4. Training
Now I think you've perhaps got the first two points in spades, but 3 and especially 4 need a new approach. Physically you looked flat and fleshy last night. You need to seriously get someone like Kerry Kayes to write you out a diet sheet and coach you on your metabolism and overall diet. You are what you eat. Eating 5 smaller meals will satisfy your body into thinking it's being fed properly. Eating two bulky meals and snacking is not productive for such a sport nd KK would tell you that. Your cannibalising your muscle and anything you eat is stored as fat as result. Hence the lack of muscle definition and retention when making weight.
I remember Michael Gomez crashed the weight often, when KK got involved (ahead of the Arthur fight actually) Gomez was panicking saying "the weights not coming off!! i must stop eating" and KK said absolutely not, trust me on this, keep eating what your eating - and then Gomez p*ssed the weight, felt stronger than he ever has done before and smashed Arthur to bits.
The mentality thing is something that all fighters have, to be top dog - and it's a good thing - so long it doesn't manifest itself in the wrong manner i.e. When you feel so completely supreme to someone in the opposite corner and just look at common people you've also fought and sparred.
Lennox Lewis / Rahman, Tyson / Buster Douglas, Marquez / Chris John, Morales /Raheem - so many have taken their eye off the ball and got exposed. Better fighters and worst fighters have all fell into the trap and you nearly fell into one last night yourself. One that you set yourself.
You have to realise your a big scalp to these guys. They will train their nuts off to beat you. Their losses may have been littered with honest excuses like your previous performances when you had flu or whatever. You need to really train like a beast full time now - not switch it on and off until the big time arrives - because that approach will backfire and there will be no bigtime.
Jaeger Bombs, Hugo Boss, 'Mates' .... they all pale into insignificance when your rich enough to live in a £1.5m house with swimming pool, to drive an Aston Martin and fly first class. To retire aged 32 with a cabinet full of titles, worldwide fame and some tremendous fights under your belt.
Monday make them calls, make them changes. Turn your mobile off and get training daft. Maybe go and sweat in mount Teide in Tenerife for a few weeks.
Many would kill for your ability - but like I said, it's only part of the picture.
