***Prospect Watch*** Chris Evangelou (7-0)

CHRIS ‘THE FLASH’ EVANGELOU 7-0 (1 KO) returns to the ring this Saturday night on the undercard of the British and Commonwealth heavyweight title bout between Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury.
Evangelou has impressed since turning professional two years ago with a perfect seven wins out of seven. The humble but ambitious boxer is setting his sights high aiming for a domestic title by the start of 2012 and then a world title soon after.

The light-welterweight even believes he will reach his dream of taking a world title belt off Amir Khan one day, ‘The Flash’ exclusively told UNDISPUTED, “I would love to get in the ring with him one day, I have high expectations. If I don’t become a world champion I would have failed. Khan is a great fighter it would be a great fight we are both quick but I do reckon I am that bit stronger. I have a long way to go but when I get to the top and if he is still around I will definitely want to.”

Evangelou is an excellent prospect and one that many have tipped to be a world champion in the future including top trainers such as Freddie Roach.

The British-born Greek Cypriot missed out on the chance to go to the Olympics in his amateur career but has taken heart from others that have also missed out, “I am encouraged a lot by some of the fighters that haven’t gone to the Olympics but have gone on to be great boxers, the likes of Ricky Hatton, Joe Calzaghe and most recently George Groves.

To go to the Olympics is the amateur dream but I came into boxing to become a World champion not an Olympic champion. I started late compared to others competing for a place. I had 30 fights under my belt guys I were facing had about 200.”

The north London fighter was fast-tracked through the amateur scene but has learned to be patient while in the pro game, “You have to be patient, my aim is to become a British champion but first I need to get 8, 10 and 12 rounds under my belt. I used to set myself targets and goals and I still have them but sometimes things don’t go to plan and it is out of your hands.

I am at the right age and it’s the right time for me so I will be looking to get as many fights under my belt and hopefully win a domestic title by the end of the year.”

The Enfield-based boxer is keen to get the fights under his belt and on Saturday it will be his third fight of the year, but Evangelou has been disappointed it isn’t his fourth, “I am the type of guy who always wants to be in the ring I was upset I didn’t fight in June but there has been no concrete fight for me. A busy fighter is a good fighter. It doesn’t take me long to recover after a fight, I am a counter-puncher I don’t get hit much , it takes me 2-3 days to recover and I will be back in the gym.

Evangelou told of his belief that no matter who he fights he will always look to perform, “I always try to perform. If you sell tickets, you will get the big fights. Khan got knocked out and three fights later he had a world-title shot, why? He can sell tickets and he bounced back. I will always perform for my fans too.”

Talking about a domestic title he is aiming for by the start of 2012 the 25-year-old believes he needs two big performances, “I was supposed to spar with Ashley Theophane (British light-welterweight champion) but he never came, I am realistic I know I wouldn’t get a shot at him just yet. I have only had seven fights, he has had over 30. If after two big performances and he still holds the belt then we’ll see. For the minute the English title is possible before the end of the year.”

Talking about the praise he received off trainer Roach and the pressure that comes with being labelled a future world champion, Evangelou said, “It is hard to have a lot of pressure on you. During training Roach has told me I will go far he will be shouting out around the gym that I will be a world champ, everyone then watches to see if I am that good, it is pressure but I really do perform under it, I thrive on it.”

Chris is not the only Evangelou to be setting his sights on world domination, brother Andreas has just started his professional career, “He is bulldozing through his division at the moment but has only had two outings, he will probably be getting a domestic title soon too there are less boxers to face in his pool, so it will come sooner. We are aiming for Team Evangelou to be a household name by 2013. I am very close with my brother we help each other out in boxing and in life.”

Evangelou has set his sights high but the down-to-earth Londoner knows that every fight and every performance matters. Remember the name Chris ‘The Flash’ Evangelou.
