I was disappointed Eduardo Alicea turned pro, I really think he could have represented the U.S. at 152. The money from Golden Boy came calling however. I also thought Jose Benavidez would stay am too. I expect Rau'shee Warren and Raynell Williams to turn pro if they don't make it. Those guys being from Ohio, as I am, I have a pretty good idea that they will from what I hear, as well as Antonio Nieves.Dennis wrote:Get ready for a lot of top amateurs turning pro in the next few months. Guys that didn't make the trials & guys that did but don't win them. It will make the pro game more interesting. It happens every 4 years. Then the following year's Natl tournaments have a lot of new faces.
USA Olympic Trials - Men's Boxing
Re: USA Olympic Trials - Men's Boxing
Re: USA Olympic Trials - Men's Boxing
im surprised at alot of these picks for shimmell, when he was beat 19-4 by hunter and 13-4 by geffard in the last outing, and also lost to jeckabson as well in the last outing
Re: USA Olympic Trials - Men's Boxing
I'm not surprised. Jordan is boxing much better and the revised scoring system will count more of Jordan's punches. Flurries are now given points. The shell defense is less effective now so when guys hit boxers like Geffrard some of the punches will now count. The 1 second window was killing amateur boxing. Good riddance.
Re: USA Olympic Trials - Men's Boxing
5 out of the last 6 National Golden Gloves Shimmell has placed. He won the USA's twice and has wins over Charles, Dennis, Jekabson, Kisner and now Tabiti. I am picking Geffrard because I think he compiles more speed and enough power to beat out all the heavyweights, plus he doesn't give up punches well to his opponents and he fought C. Russo really tough, losing by one point or two, I can't remember. I know it was reallly close. Point is ... Shimmell has to be one of the favorites at 201, along with Hunter.

Re: USA Olympic Trials - Men's Boxing
Cletomax, is there a reason that you did not list the Marine in the 123 class? I have a vested interest in the 123s.
Re: USA Olympic Trials - Men's Boxing
The list that Cletomex posted is from USA Boxing's website and they only have 7 boxers listed for the 114, 123 & 178 pound weight classes.
Re: USA Olympic Trials - Men's Boxing
if u are interested in the 123 lb fighters u should look into isaac torres
the quiet ones are always the mot dangerous...

Re: USA Olympic Trials - Men's Boxing
I belive in respecting all opponents, but the 123 favorite is Diaz. The 123s will come down to Diaz or the Midget. My $$ is on the Midget.
Re: USA Olympic Trials - Men's Boxing
132 & 178 are the two weight classes that I see as having the most depth from top to bottom. Almost every boxer seems to have a realistic shot at winning the trials. There will be lots of tough bouts. It should be a lot of fun.

108 - Louie Byrd
114 - Rau'shee Warren
123 - Tremaine Williams
132 - Raynell Williams
141 - Semajay Thomas
152 - Errol Spence
165 - Jesse Hart
178 - Jeffrey Spencer
201 - Steve Geffrard
201+ - Jonathan Hamm
R.Williams barely made the Olympic trails last time around and we all know how that turned out for him. I think people are sleeping a bit on Semajay Thomas I was surprised not to see him get more love here. Geffrard and Hunter should be a war and Hamm and Thomspn should be one as well. Warren has to be the biggest lock but if the trails have taught us anything over the years it is that anything, anything can happen.

My Final Picks for the Trials...
108- Louie Byrd
114- Raushee Warren
123- Tramaine Williams
132- Erick DeLeon
141- Pedro Sosa
152- Errol Spence Jr.
165- Luis Arias
178- Marcus Browne
201- Jordan Shimmell
201+ Lenroy Thompson
I think 152 may come down to Amir Imam and Errol Spence...leaning towards Spence due to experience...165 I think Arias and Hart...178 it may be Browne and Odom at it again...hard to pick against DeLeon at 132(although I heard him and Kenny Sims had a close fight in the National GG's)...anything can happen at 123 and 141 in my opinion...
I just hope USABoxing shows some of these fights on their website or post some fights on YouTube......would be great if they broadcasted the Finals but I won't get my hopes too high...wish I was out there

Re: USA Olympic Trials - Men's Boxing
Joe Perez seems to have gotten the military spot -- he lost to Torres at the Last Chance Qualifier final.
And I guess Brant, since he was the runner-up at the Last Chance also got the 178 spot?

114) Cantu def. Lopez and Warren def. Franklin. Jose Ramirez clearly looks too good to be defeated, IMO. Spence is about to fight!

keep the updates comin!

And Spence won, but it was closer than I thought. Vasquez is a tough fighter!
Re: USA Olympic Trials - Men's Boxing
Clarify: Closer than I thought it would be before the fight started. I don't know the score yet, probably a victory by 5 or so for Spence.
Re: USA Olympic Trials - Men's Boxing
Supers are finishing up; just wanna say NYAm90 had like 15 predicitions and he got almost all right tonight. Good job! Odom, Shabazz, Browne and Spencer won, no surprises, figured they would be the four. I'm sure scores will be announced on usaboxing.org by the time I get back to my room.
