The science of the second wind?

Post by Counter-puncher »

here's one i was wondering about the other day

is there any kind of scientific proof/ theory behind the existence of the 2nd wind?

i was wondering on a completely cod-science level, if the way the body lets energy out almost in a 'staged' or gradual manner by giving a second wind, is the 2nd wind the body's way of compensating for the fact that up to the point of the 2nd wind kickin in, the body was kindof husbanding its resources, so to speak, and then releases more energy when it realises that the demands being placed on it aren't going anywhere?

It might be a slight change/shift in the type of respiration employed by the body. Biology isn't my strong point though, so I may well be talking bollocks.

Good choice of subject fella. I definitely remember reading somewhere that it's an illusion caused largely by one fighter, for example, fading quicker than the other - makes it look like the first fighter has found another gear whereas in actuality he's just maintained the original pace better.
However, having said that, I've definitely experienced occasions where I've seemed to be able to 'tap into' an extra gear when previously I'd be flagging.
Would love to learn more about this if anyone has some insights - Scrap? Macho? :TU:

I'm sure I once caught the "Lactic shuttle". I don't know where I got on, but I ended up in Patpong, watching a katoey do something dreadful with a ping-pong ball...

I run 3 miles every morning, and each mile is quicker. I am always blowing out my arse for the first 10 min until I get my 2nd wind.

The Krebs Cycle kicks in after 15 to 20 minutes of exercise which equates to the 4th or 5th round, about the time boxers get their second wind.

This is when lactic acid gets converted more easily back into glycogen to fuel muscle power.
