Theres no way Murray could have fought at that pace or with that success if he'd been on the piss.

I've got no view either way on the Murray claims, but let's not forget that while this is true for a lot of people, there are others who can hold it down better - look at the likes of McGrath and Adams, for example, and there are plenty of fighters with well-documented drinking problems.

I dont believe it,ive heard Murray is a bit of a party animal,but only on the internet&Gallagher was telling his mates to not encourage him out etc..This story reminds me of a mate of mine who was a half decent amatuer&had the eastern counties abas 2nights after,he did party hard on the thursday night&he knew he might have to box twice on the saturday,he won the semi on ko&lost in the final stopped in the last round against a lad who got to the aba finals&boxed for the british title as a pro...Shame really this lad could have done ok if it wasnt for his party lifestyle...

This lad really could have like many others...hes older than me but i call him a lad my uncles best mate,he was my idol when i was a lad following him up&down the country in the abas&it broke my heart the first time i see him lose...Hes still a hero in my eyes 20 odd years later&were really good mates&drinking buddys now...he went of the rails&played up with the ladies&partied hard when he should be training..Like i said i cant see Gallagher letting Murray do that in Germany!!

Up to the last 3 rounds or so, I thought Murray looked the likely winner: Kev was landing clean, and no reaction from JM at all. Bookies seemed to see it that way, as don't think odds swung Kev's way until near the finish.

Fight of the year so far ? Got to be up there.

I had murray 4-1 up in rounds at one point, Mitchell had pulled it backto 1 before he ko'd him

i dont think you can really compare playing a football match with ten other team members helping you out to a 12 round professional fight. vs a potential world class opponent.

most fighters dry out during camp and go hell for leather when its over i think.

This post is rubbish. I was in Germany at his hotel (the Radisson Blu) after the fight. He was there but was not drinking.
He trained every night and sparred most evenings with Paul Truscott.

i dont think you can really compare playing a football match with ten other team members helping you out to a 12 round professional fight. vs a potential world class opponent.

And I take yours - wasn't really trying to compare footie with boxing, but just that there are certain world-class sportsmen, including boxers, who've somehow been able to continue to perform at the top level despite abusing their bodies - I know I couldn't do that though

if he has to make any changes, if he's doing anything wrong in or out of the ring, then now's the perfect time to change - following a tough defeat.

he'll get plenty more opportunities - FW was talking of rees for the EBU, and even a mitchell rematch down the line as possibilities - and defeat can be the making of many fighters.

in the lead up to this fight, one fight i kept on referencing was gomez v arthur. gomez had to win that one and mitchell - after squandering the katsidis opportunity, and out of the ring troubles (apparently boozing, and all this drugs stuff) - faced the scrapheap if he lost to murray.

khan (vs prescott) and mitchell (vs katsidis) had their bad nights and came back better. mitchell got the win of his career and featured in another domestic classic (the other being vs johanesson).

if murray was going to lose, it was going to be vs someone with movement and fast feet. if you look at world champions with styles like murray (upright, pressure), you'll see that israel vazquez and jose luis castillo also had hard, hard setbacks but battled through to become formidable world champs. beign big and strong at the weight and having awicked body attack, not to mention having tremendous willpower, can go a long way.. i reckon murray has these qualities.

murray has been in two of the most exciting fights of this year in the UK, vs quazghari and mithell. he didn't seem at his best. FW knows how to bring a fighter back & gets the opportunities so i hope to see john murray come storming back.

this result reminds me somewhat of moore vs rhodes - another classic before which we assumed moore would run his man over. moore was near the end. murray is still young and won't be waiting forever for EBU title shots as mooresy had to. hopefully the fight of ther year stoppage loss won't be too harsh a setback.

Funny how you didn't mention the threat of Mitchell's movement and fast feet beforehand Barn Murray may be young, but he can't keep shipping punishment like that. For what it's worth, I also think he'd lose to those with different styles to the aforementioned, but who are just simply better - Rios would outman him at his own game, for example.

Heard off someone very close to John Murray before that when he was in Germany for a week with Macklin he done nothing but get pissed and even had a fight with his trainer joe gallagher who was also getting pissed with them. now you can say bullshit but this is fact ive known John for a long time and he does not have proper training camps and was for a fact out getting pissed nearly every day leading up to his beating off mitchell so it was no suprise to me when i saw him lose the way he did!

Its just heresay, but he has failed to make the weight in the past so maybe he isnt as dedicated as he should be. He couldnt have been too much out of shape, he gave Mitchell a tough fight.
