What do you guys think of this fight. PERSONALLY, THEIR SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN THE FAMOUS LONG COUNT MATCH. SHARKEY WAS ROBBED OF A VICTORY. HAD SHARKEY WON , HE WOULD HAVE FACED GENE TUNNEY INSTEAD. sharkey was well in command and outboxing an aging dempsey. he came very close to knocking dempsey out and it looked like he would anytime. then jack started hitting him low. and in the 7th, dempsey hit him very low and sharkey turned to the ref to complain and dempsey knocked him out with a left hook. i thought that was very dirty on dempseys part. the knockout wasnt even legit. sharke ywas hit low and the fight should have been stopped right their. i guess someone should have told sharkey the saying "protect urself at all times" cause he was unfailry knocked out by a sucker punch.
do u think dempsey was dirty and should have been disqualified??? u think the knockout was legit???/

I think Dempsey was guilty of being dirty but I think Sharkey robbed himself of victory in two ways: 1. You dont try to get the ref's help. If the ref doesnt do something, take matters into your own hands or wait, dont actively ask for the ref's help "Protect yourself at all times". 2. If you look at the film it looks like Sharkey is trying to win via DQ by playing the foul for all its worth. He wasnt KOd by Dempsey's hook to the jaw because the first thing he does when he goes down is to grab his groin, he then crawls around on the canvas clutching his groin, never does he give an indication that he was unconcious or even hurt by the punch. I think Sharkey quit in the sense that he was trying to get a quick, easy win by DQ. When you try to play the percentages like that its a gamble and he lost his gamble.
..dempsey by his own account stated the advice..."always make the last punch clean. what are they going to do....disqualify you?" one of his best combinations was a left hook to the groin and a right to the jaw. but....in the standards of his day he was not a particularly dirty fighter.
while we have dempsey as the subject.....i've always wondered how hard he really punched when he could....as the rules allowed..stand right over willard and hit him again as soon as willard's hands left the canvas....and have to do it again and again.....and willard still came out for two more rounds.
if joe louis had that option boxing would have been outlawed because of the plethora of fatalities. and you can name your own favorite heavy puncher to the list.

yeah i think dempsey was a little dirty, but what fighter at the time wasnt, maybe gene tunney because he was a gentleman, but dempsey would probly be a little dirty to keep it even he was one tough mother...
Klompton and Jacleem hit the nail right on the head.
You can not DQ a guy for landing a clean shot to the head, even if the guy was looking at the ref at the time. That blow, believe it or not, was not a foul. At no point in time can a boxer look at the ref and say something and be "safe" from punches while doing so. It is very clear that if you do look to the ref and try to protest you are running the risk of getting tagged.
So Dempsey won fairly. The low blows were not bad enough that Dempsey should get DQed either IMO.
This is a bit of footage that should be showed at any gym to help remind young fighters..."Protect yourself at all times".

Re: Jack Dempsey vs Jack sharkey
A fighter can't "call a time out" in a fight. Perhaps Dempsey should have been warned or penalized for the low blow, but the fact is that's up to the referee. Sharkey can't drop his hands and stop paying attention while the fight is in action and not expect to be held accountable.BrocktonBlockbuster49 wrote:What do you guys think of this fight. Dempsey won the fight, fair and square.
Dempsey vs. Sharkey
In my opinion, Jack Dempsey won the bout with Jack Sharkey
far and square. It is possible that Dempsey landed some low
blows and the referee didn't see them. But the fact is that
Sharkey made an incrediably dumb move by droppping his
hands, turning his head towards the referee, and giving a
fighter like Dempsey a free shot with his great left hook.
In fairness to Sharkey, it appears that he didn't make a big
commotion about being fouled when he got back to the
dressing room. According to one account, when his manager
was complaining about an alleged foul in the dressing room,
Sharkey told his manager to forget about it.
