Martin Rogan
Re: Martin Rogan
I thought Sprott was fighting Dimitreenko on 20th August. Does that mean Rogan is set to face the winner?

Re: Martin Rogan
Dmitrenko and Sprott are fighting for the proper European title, whereas Rogan's fighting for the EU bauble (don't even regard it as high as the British myself)
Thats how I read it anyway

The EU is hardly a bauble, unless we are basically calling pretty much every title a bauble.saturday_kid wrote:Dmitrenko and Sprott are fighting for the proper European title, whereas Rogan's fighting for the EU bauble (don't even regard it as high as the British myself)

It is more important than the British title and has as much integrity with logical ranking as any other belt.

Re: Martin Rogan
Ok may have been a bit harsh, but look at a lot of the fighters who have fought and won it, a lot even before theyve been (or who have been beaten) at domestic level.
However in all fairness it does give a good ranking for the european title.
I sort of see it as how the English title is to the British.
Either way Rogan aint nowhere enar the best in the UK anymore let alone anywhere else.

Not all countries in Europe have as strong a domestic scene as Britain and they havent got any way of getting into the EBU rankings by winning their national titles unlike the BBBoC title.
The EU title provides that stepping stone between smaller national titles spain/ireland/belgium etc and the European title.
Re: Martin Rogan
Right I think there is a bit of confusion here.
There is the EBU title - thats the main belt, held by Alexander Dimitrenko. It's holders are universally recognised European champions.
Then there is the EBU-EU title. It's effectively the European equivalent of an inter-continental and has a brother in the EBU-EEE (or Non EU) title. I can't recall a single fight for either of these belts and can not recall any situations where the winners were provided with shots at the main belt. By that reckoning, describing it as a bauble is a little insulting to baubles.

Re: Martin Rogan
Off the top of my head Andy Murray won the EU lightweight title and then fought Gavin Rees for the EBU title. Lahcene Zemmouri won the flyweight title and in his next fight got a shot at the EBU title, same with Stephane Jamoye and Paulie Hyland. I am sure there are more if I was arsed to lookearsjohn wrote:Right I think there is a bit of confusion here.

Re: Martin Rogan
The first Sprott-Harrison fight was for the EBU-EU if memory serves. And the bloke Dimitrenko fought last year had the EBU-EE title and challenged for the EBU belt. Jomardashvli who lost to Macklin had come off a draw with the EE champ.earsjohn wrote:Right I think there is a bit of confusion here.

However for that reason you do get a lot of under par fighters fighting for the EU title
Re: Martin Rogan
Fair enough. It has a profile and some credence, but for Brit fighters I guess there are better ways of going about things.slapbangwhallop wrote:Off the top of my head Andy Murray won the EU lightweight title and then fought Gavin Rees for the EBU title. Re: Martin Rogan
Exactly
Rogan's last fight was against a guy who had lost 17 and won just 11. Hardly prep for a legitimate title is it?
Should have hung up his gloves, but he's a decent guy and I wish him well.

Yeah, its of little consequence for guys that can fight for a British title and springboard into a EBU title from that. But for Spaniard, Irish, French, Italians etc its often the springboard to an EBU shot.earsjohn wrote:Fair enough. OK, I went looking for more examples - Salem Bouaita won it, retained it and then fought Rendall for the EBU title. Same for Osman Aktas, Vitali Tajbert, Giuseppe Lauri, Leonard Bundu, Daniele Petrucci, Lukas Konecny, Affif Belghecham, Antonio Brancalion, Marco Huck and Sprott!

Plenty there then....
Do you guys think he should still be fighting? What's he looked like up close lately?

Re: Martin Rogan
Looking back at that there is some good EU title challengers, my main problem with it is below standard British fighters (and Irish) getting high EBU rankings when theyre far from the best even domestically - as is the case with Rogan.
IMO Sprott, Price, Fury, Chisora etc would all easily deal with Rogan. He had 2 good performaces against past it opponents - he's had his day now.

The British title is one of the oldest national titles in world boxing. The British title has had many great champions and a history that is second to none. Within the eight traditional categories is a history and prestige that puts any title belt out there today into a its proper perspective - and that includes the WBC/WBA/IBF and hahaha WBO.
How about that logic Len?

Well to be fair, Rogan is being brought in as the "opponent"saturday_kid wrote:Looking back at that there is some good EU title challengers, my main problem with it is below standard British fighters (and Irish) getting high EBU rankings when theyre far from the best even domestically - as is the case with Rogan.

The list of guys on the wrong end of a British title defence recent were Sam Sexton, Danny Williams, John McDermott, Scott Gammer, Micky Steeds and Mark Krence. I would say Rogan is at least on a par.

Perhaps it is a smidge below the British title but still quite comparable with a logical path to the EBU title unlike many intertwobob titles.
Maybe take the Anglocentric specs off for a sec old chaps!
Re: Martin Rogan
I suppose that from inside GB it looks insignificant because our lads don't need to fight for it. Outside the larger European countries it must be a useful stepping-stone towards a ranking.
