A question about the boxing 'season'

Why does boxing have a 'season', like on Sky Sports last week they were saying, oh this show is our last of the current season.

If boxing is a struggling sport, then why oh why does it shut down for the summer, at the EXACT same time that the football shuts down? Surely this is the ideal time to have some decent boxing events on that will fill the gap for football lovers who are maybe looking at other sports for a bit?

Not quite sure I understand why boxing even needs to have 'a season' as such?

Great post, I've never bought into this rubbish about a 'boxing season'. Our game should be filling the gap in the market whilst other sports are on their 'off-season'

I have read a few times that promoters suggest a summer boxing event cannot make much money, that is why Hennessy tried to put an event on in Marbella so he said.

its a chance for boxers to relax and enjoy a holiday although anyone fighting in september cant really kick back like the rest could ,
also for whatever reason a bit of sun puts people off training apart from the really dedicated ones , their all at bbqs etc , walk in any gym at this sort of time of year and very few are as busy as they are for the rest of the year , if PEOPLE dont change their habbits etc then boxing cannot change either , its finacially sound , even myself i dont do any white collar shows in july or august , thats the time of year when im happier for my lads to go and fight on away shows .

Presumably because people go on holiday around this time so either are out of the country or have less money to spend.

Boxing is a business.
It has been proven over many many years that unless it's a "superfight" you just can't get the public to buy into boxing in July or August.
Over the years it's also become traditional for fighters to recharge their batteries at this time.
Officially there isn't a boxing season.

Traditionallly there is a boxing season and there still is in the amateurs.Essentially you always had the summer off, even in the pro's these days there is a lot less work in the summer months, the dinner shows are always in the winter with a few bigger shows in the summer.

I didn't used to get the season idea, then it was explained to me in a manner I could get my head around.

You have to remember that for the vast majority of boxers life is not much different to that of most normal British working men — they have jobs, families, children etc. Those that make a living purely from boxing are a very small minority. So like anyone with a job, family and kids, the school summer holiday is the time to get away for a couple of weeks and spend time together. The boxing season allows that.

Contrary to what you have been told mate, boxing does not have a "season" as it were.
Simply because good fights can be arranged for any time of the year.

It is nothing more complicated than that.

Kelly Pavliks fighting in a couple of weeks and Robert Guerrero v Marcos Maidana is at the end of the month. Brian Magee fights Jaime Barbosa in the middle of August. But these are all out of the UK. Not much happening domestically until September it seems.

So while Smith and Nelson may be off to Morecambe with their bucket and spades, hopefully they can send the summer work experience off to the states to bring us the Guerrero v Maidana scrap which has the makings of a genuine fight of the year.
