why do boxrec like many others still continue to give this false information on gipsy billy daniels that he was born in my hometown of newport and that his birthname was thomas .the undisputed facts are that he was born in llanelly, named william and his father was d,j. daniels a llanelly and wales international 1891-9 rugby player.he was being billed in the u.k. as gipsy in 1920 and did not go to the u. s. a. until 1922 so the story that james t. johnson gave him this name looks to be another fairy tale. the first bout at newport on his record is another mistake, a boxer also using the name young daniels was reported as having only his second fight and it was against jack tucker newport not jack turner and the actual date was thursday 18 august 1921. i appreciate it is not going to be possible for his record to be 100% correct but the above errors ca be verified.
