Training vs boozing
Training vs boozing
Could you live the life of a fighter? i.e. train, sleep, eat clean, live clean; no nights on the booze. I'd find it very hard myself.

I think if you have ability from an early age then you should be able to make those sacrifices -You have to give it everything because it's only a short career.
Re: Training vs boozing
I had the ability so I did... I sacrificed training in order to be a good boozer - and I live by my choice.

age comes into this when i was a young sportsman i found it very very hard to stay in, i was single with money in my pocket and lots of spare time on my hands, its hard to stay in and watch t.v when theres all them temptations just waiting for you to get stuck into and i must admit i got stuck into a fair few
but the older you get and wiser you get it makes it easier to make the correct decisions with regards to your career, but i found by the time i decided to wise up in the football world it was too late the ship had sailed and my best years had been wasted on cheap booze and even cheaper birds, thats why my second career as a boxer im a hell of alot more focussed on my goals because i know what its like to pisss a talent up against a wall its easy done i wasnt the first and i wont be the last

It probably did affect him though. After he beat Tszyu he fought a lot less often and had alot more time to gain weight in between fights. He seemed to lose his sharpness quite quickly.Andypittcov wrote:Mr hatton balanced it out quite well really.

I love training more than going out now. Feels great when you're super fit, when you look good you feel good. Just coping with the boredom though, ...that's what I find hard.
Always feel guilty now after a "messy one." Going to (try) do 12 weeks off the drink.
No point going gym 3 times a week then going out Fri/Sat drinking beer and eating shite, defeats the point eh?

The time issue seems to be a big problem for footballers. Read Paul Mersons autobiography a few weeks back and that seemed to be his major problemcurtis wood wrote:age comes into this when i was a young sportsman i found it very very hard to stay in, i was single with money in my pocket and lots of spare time on my hands, its hard to stay in and watch t.v when theres all them temptations just waiting for you to get stuck into and i must admit i got stuck into a fair fewbut the older you get and wiser you get it makes it easier to make the correct decisions with regards to your career, but i found by the time i decided to wise up in the football world it was too late the ship had sailed and my best years had been wasted on cheap booze and even cheaper birds, thats why my second career as a boxer im a hell of alot more focussed on my goals because i know what its like to pisss a talent up against a wall its easy done i wasnt the first and i wont be the last
I couldn't do it when i was younger and had a few mates who could have done a lot more in sport but they couldn't handle the thought of missing something if they stayed in. We could just be going to a local and they'd still be out
Re: Training vs boozing
Me and my friend Russell Walker were the perfect example of this thread. We both did a bit of training at our respective gyms, meanwhile I discovered cider and the youth club, he continued and got better and better, winning shows as a kid and getting a few England caps as a senior.
I think at a young age you need a supportive father to keep you in check and instill the right mindset to train even when your friends are out having fun. Something I never had, but Russell was really well supported in that area by his family.
