Why couldn't tonight's Hennessy show be on Sky?

Post by Finch »

There's clearly no boxing on Sky tonight. So why couldn't it pick up the Hennessy bill tonight as a one off?

Surely Sky Boxing can't be that tight so as not to pay for this show? So if there's a date available and cash in the bin what stopped Sky from going for it?

I didn't say I wasn't happy. Just curious why Sky didn't decide to pick it up as a one off with HS given they have no boxing tonight.

Sky have a schedule.
Sky have contracts with certain Promotors.
Hennessey is not one of them.
Simples !
Jesus, it was on free to air - what's the problem ?

Calm down treacle. I already said i wasn't complaining, simply curious.

That's exactly my point, regardless of contracts, Sky had a free slot, why not fill it with Meaty Mick as a one off last night?

Not quite a free slot though, they had live darts from 7-10:30 last night. The semis of one of the big tournaments for a sport aimed at the same demographic as boxing, and a tournament from an organisation that already provides boxing output on sky. It would have been a peculiar scheduling decision to split thee audience and piss off a key promoter.

Im sure one of the key promoters wouldn't mind especially if he had one of the main event fighters.

Or Sky didn't want to go up against Hearn's darts, Matchroom provides 18% of Sky Sports total output after all.

I think it;s simply they don't like Hennessy, for whatever reason. look at Froch, leaves Hennessy and immediately gets on Sky, same with Barker. So they clearly liked his fighters, but wouldn't deal with him, shame really.

Which could underline my point if anything. Obviously I know about the cancellations, which is why I ask why, if Sky were so hell bent on showing boxing that night, they didn't pick up Quigg's world title eliminator, a ready made replacement? Obviously they intended to run against the C5 show originally, so what changed? Ask yourself who the cancelled shows were to be promoted by? Matchroom.

I'm not saying I'm right, I'm just throwing an idea out there, but I'm certainly not wrong on the grounds you suggest.

The one thing Barker needed more than anything in the world was another fight against a southpaw to prepare him a little more for this impossible task.
His team should have pushed for this big time instead of throwing him straight in to the lions den in my opinion.

So this would lead me to believe that Sky didn't want to go up against channel 5 because there ratings would look ridiculous in comparison to 5 s.
And the 3m viewing figure that has just been announced has just proved that.

Barker fight was cancelled as they did not want to risk an injury before the biggest fight of his life.

Sky probably will dump boxing in next few years as the viewing figures are so low. So hope Channel 5 will show weekly fights in future.

Barkers promoter had a date for him that was at least 10 weeks before the Martinez fight, so a prep fight would have been easy to work into the deal.

Yes, but a clash of heads could open a cut or a DQ could happen. Why risk his chance to beat 'the man'.
