Duran vs Whitaker

Post by Jaybird »

I probably hate Whitaker more than any other fighter...Well, not hate, but totally dislike. I also "hate" to admit it but I think Sweet Pea would have pitched a damn shut out over Duran at Lightweight...or ANY weight...your thoughts??

I've often thought about this one too.

If Sugar Ray Leonard could make Duran do a "No Mas", then Whittaker might have been able to make Duran pay for an advertising Hoarding on the side of The Empire State building with the words 'NO MAS' on it.

If they had fought, I think Duran's sheer aggression & will to win would have made the fight competitive & they'd have probably fought a draw with the general consensus that Whittaker was robbed. :DDD

I could beat Duran, because he couldn't deal with movers. All I would have to do is move around the ring and he'd eventually quit. Similar with Tyson. He was vastly superior as a fighter to me, but all I'd have to do is stand up to him and show him I wasn't afraid and he'd mentally crumble, because he was nothing more than a bully and all, and every single opponent he ever faced that threw a return punch beat him. It's true. Look it up.

Whitaker would win the fight --- Duran would undoubtedly get the decision.

Whitaker was, all told, as close to KO-proof a fighter as you've ever seen.

So what your'e saying is that anyone who watched a few fight films, and had a strong constitution combined with a charming attitude and an "internet warrior" sensiblity, could probably waltz past Duran and KO him....lickity split.

I take it you work for Bekins....http://www.bekins.com/moving/

Do I have that right?

Never KO him, but I wouldn't have to. I could just dance around a little. If I did the worm in center ring Duran would have no choice but to call it off. He couldn't deal with people who moved their feet. Even when being driven around by his managers, he'd have panic attacks at the site of people walking down the boulevard. The sight of shuffling feet was just too much for him to bare. If I just walked toward him it would be the same story, considering I would be "moving" and Duran just couldn't deal with "movers". Ask anyone.

An original take Carlos.

I do feel that 'The Pea' was such a slick fighter, he wouldn't even move all that much, just stay 'in the pocket' and fire off rapid punches. Great reflexes and defensive ability.

A great fighter and lightweight.

Duran can win this, not by KO, but could be slick himself and given his strong chin, punch, accuracy and defensive ability, I wouldn't call this a forgone conclusion.

I still fancy Sweet Pea, but not by much.

Against most fighters he was more than capable of dominating with that approach. It would be his demise if he attempted that with Duran, though. In order to have a chance in this fight he'd have to fight purely off the backfoot, sticking behind the jab, constantly turning, etc. a la Ramirez I or Nelson.

P.S. I turned the sarcasm off for this post.

Duran over 15 rounds would take the decision. Whittaker would be the his most evasive opponent but Whittaker would never have faced anyone as quick or accurate.

I agree here. I largely think Whitaker would be forced to play defense to the absolute point of lacking much offense at all, he'd make it an ugly fight like he did with De La Hoya later on in his career, and he doesn't have Leonard's hand speed, range, and pop to keep Duran occupied as he pivoted and danced around.

I thought it was only me that thought a moon-walking Michael Jackson would give Duran fits

This would be a very close fight either way. I'd wager it wouldn't be too dissimilar to an engorged version of Chang/Zapata I, except Pete wouldn't spend nearly as much time on the ropes as Zapata.

Whatever the case, no one ever really slowed Pete's work rate. You can bet your ass he'd be pumping that jab out ad nauseam.

This is like having a fantasy about yourself with a beautiful woman in which she rejects you and goes off with your best mate.

Why do this to yourself?

if you put the duran from 72/80 against whitaker then i think that duran wins this fight, most likely on points if the fight was 15 rounds then i could see duran pulling out a late stoppage whitaker's movment would cause problems no doubt, but duran was relentless, probley the best lighweight in history.the duran that boxed after that who knows lost to laing, gave hagler all he could handel, lost to sims, got sparked by hearns and then beat barkley.and of course the no mas.

Depends on what Duran your talking about.
Most of the longer term fans would most likely have gone with Duran,I suppose it depends on the circumstances.
In a 1 off with both boxers at their best,Whitaker.

Whitaker's my favourite fighter, but even I think he gets overrated on these forums from time to time. I'd narrowly favour a peak Duran over a peak Whitaker at Lightweight. Would be a hell of a bout stylistically, though. No doubt very close as well.

At lightweight Duran would be far to aggressive for Whitaker IMO......After Sweet Pea, driving Duran mad for quite a few rounds then eventually Duran overwhelming Whitaker late in a 15 round fight :TU:
