Olympic to Pro Debuts

Post by bluehorizon »

I was wandering if anybody knows anything about what olympians like Bakhtiiyar Artayev (welter) of Kazakhstan and Manus Boonjumnong (lt. welter) of Thailand are up to. Following there sucess in the olympics I figured they would probably go pro but as of yet I hadn't heard anything.

Also, I was hoping to get some names of 2004 olympians (outside u.s.) that have turned pro since the games ended.
Thanks

I think a lot of the guys from the former USSR countries like Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan still don't turn professional. I imagine there isn't much of a pro boxing framework in those countries yet which effectively means they have to move abroad in order to turn pro. Plus they can probably make a decent livelihood (relatively speaking) in their home country as a leading amateur.

Artayev is fighting at the Moscow World Cup I believe and Boonjumnong hasn't been very active lately. He's dropped out of some tournaments apparently due to lack of training. He's a millionaire after the Olympic gold medal.
