Are sky going to cut back on boxing after July 2012

With the rumours that there are going to be no more PPVs, Mayweather next fight on primetime. Will Sky cut back on boxing or stop after the current contracts with the four promotors are up in July 2012.

Sky have just won the rights to show live F1 share with BBC for some events. This is likely to increase subscribers would more boxing bring in signficant numbers now. Back in the early 90s when Sky pinched Warren stable and Eubank I think it did and was important to sky.

Now with Barney Francis in charge does he see Boxing as sport worthing spending money or as he stated in article "Boxing needs to sort itself out and the best fighters need to fight the best fighters. The punters and the broadcasters are sick of seeing some of the guys that are appearing on the right side of the bill,"

Subscription based F1 has been on the cards for some time and it is a sport that is filthy rich with sponsors and backers. Sky have obviously more than subsidized the loss of PPV boxing revenue. Saying that F1 fans will be really pissed off that this is not shown on terrestial tv, I am not sure if this has transpired but the BBC were apparently going to duck out of their contract with F1 earlier than scheduled?

It will be very interesting to see if Sky retain Ringside now that it looks like they have culled PPVs for the time being. Primetime/Channel 5 have a great opportunity in front of them now, it is all getting very interesting, but at least there are options.

I'm not sure that Sky have pulled the plug on PPV, its just that there are no PPV-worthy fights in prospect. Haye has (supposedly) retired, Khan is fighting in the States and is in bed with Prime Time at the mo, Froch is yet to demonstrate PPV-worthiness and his next fight will be in the states at early o'clock. I see this more as a shot across the bows of UK based promoters of 30 years or so standing within the sport that they can't chuck together a half decent domestic clash with a so-so undercard and expect it to be PPV.

If the demand for a fight was in place for it to be truly PPV-worthy then you can guarantee Sky will be all over it. Think Haye v Vitali, Khan v Floyd, Pacquiao v Floyd and Froch v Cleverly, at a push. What other prospective fights are PPV worthy enough?

No, I don't think so.

I think that they've been stung by the criticism of their pandering to certain fighters in respect of allocating PPV dates, when there seemed to be very little criteria put in place to ensure a good, value for money product.

Plus, hopefully it'll see an end to amateurs coming out of the Olympics and being paid big money to turn pro, on PPV events against bums. It doesn't help their career progression and offers no value to the fans either.

Mayweather's fights are boring as f**k anyway, let him go to Primetime. Unless he's fighting Pacquiao I'm not interested. Even that fight I've gotten bored of speaking about.

No appeal to you does not make it a sh*t sport.

The key here is that the Beeb are losing another set of fans, they have already sent the boxing community into the wilderness and in recent times if it wastn't for Sky Sports the sport would have been non-existant on TV full stop.

Now they have also decided that F1 is no longer a viable asset and have decided to piss off another community of sports fans by chucking that away to Sky TV. It's disgusting to see as a licence payer and a fan of both sports. I understand they can be expensive sports, but surely they have a duty to give people what they want, fornicate it just reduce the Deadenders wage bill and the Strictly appearence fees for a while or summat?!?!

I think that Sky may not cut back their boxing but certainly alter and rightfully so the way in which they approach boxing broadcasting in this country. If the emergence of channel 5 as a main competitor is realised by this time then I expect Sky to make a big effort to push the prospects that they have contracted currently Gavin Degale Groves Quigg Frampton Price etc towards meaningful and exciting fights in order to compete. Then make the most of the titlists however many we have by then building them up as stars.

It could be a very interesting time.

Racing cars are developed around drivers and the feedback they give to the engineers, so no a no mark at the back of the grid wouldn't win the title if he had Sebastien Vettels car because what Mr Nobody likes may be completely different to what Vettel likes.

Put simply the best cars are the best cars because of the driver developing it into the best car.

If the matchmaking was as good as ESPN's Friday Night Fights then I don't think we would have anything to worry about.

We all know what happens if there is a really good fight on TV over the weekend. People are talking about it on Monday morning.

There was a lot of talk at my workplace on Monday morning after the Fury-Chisora fight - I know it wasn't a classic, but it was entertaining enough.

What we need is a good product - we don't need some eastern european journeyman coming over - we need good match ups.

warrens got a contract with sky for another year so he cant jump to terrestial t.v, and after ripping us off with the haye audley fight sky are now revaluating what boxing is worth to them but if i've got to pay as much as i do now watch fights then they should be on sky where i can at least watch it on h.d. as boxing fans i think all were asking for is value for money put good matchups on the bill with a meaningfull headline fight and people will pay. but boxing back on a friday what next meaningless fights for meaningless titles i'm a subscriber so i want good fights on sky on a saturday night thats why i pay nearly a grand a year.
