Just read a report on Sky that says Frank also acts as DeGale's manager.

A promoter stages fights, a manager looks after the boxer's interests.

Seems like thats a conflict of interests. I'm pretty sure in America it's illegal to be both a Manager and Promoter of the same fighter, surprised it's not the same with the BBBofC.

Define 'looking after a boxer's interests'?

Surely a promotor is supposed to do that?

Is a manager like a footballers agent who does the negotiating with the promotor/club?

Traditionally the managers and promoters job were much more defined but now the roles in this day and age have merged where they are barely discernible.

Traditionally the manager would look after his boxers interests and sort out training facilities sparring and other equipment needed. Whilst also dealing with promoters looking for the best fights and wrangling for the best monetary offer for their fighter and them which they would take a cut of anything between 10-30%.

The promoters were literally just that they promoted particular fights between fighters that they thought would make them the best money possible. Fighters were not tied to promoters in the same way as they are now they would seek out the best offers from particular promoters.

Now with long term contracts designed by promoters to build fighters and keep them in a stable to build them up and make a return on their investment the managerial side of things is often also taken up by the promoter as they fulfill the role of guiding a fighter and organising training arrangements as well as fights.

The thing that gets me with managers is that not enough of them do the basics that they should for their fighters. I speak to countless boxers who don't have a sponsor. IMO their manager's first responsibility should be to try and organise a good sponsorship deal for the fighter and earn them some local press.

It's very easy for a manager to find out who covers boxing for the fighter's local paper and contact them. You'd be amazed how many "managers" fail to do this.

weve had some managers on here who have been pretty odd and appeared to not be the greatest person to have representing you , remember the guy representing kassim ouma who was on here a year or so ago , he still represents him now too contrary to what was posted on here afterwards .

I personallu asked about a pro managers license myself , i was willing to turn my back on my unlicensed shows to move into pro management along the way to turning pro as a promotor long term , but the bbboc said i had to have previously held another license with them for 3 years , so thought about getting a trainers license but didnt bother in the end , the plan is still to turn pro as a promotor in the future but im going to do it by securing the funding through the unlicensed stuff , just to show it can be done in a way and to ensure i dont put myself into a position financially that means i cant compete , i want to do well as a pro so wont to get good money behind me to start with

I think you have to place a bond with the board before you start promoting for something like up to £10,000

A manager gets 25% a trainer 10% thats the boards ruling but they can make their own agreement for less. Alot of promoters now work on ticket percentages etc.

I believe the Muhamad Ali act makes it illegal for a manager to also be a boxer's promoter. This is because there is a conflict of interest. The manager should be finding the best fights according to the risk/reward ratio. The promoter should be putting on the best fights possible to make the biggest events with the best returns he can.

A manager promoter wil try to put on high reward low risk fights for his boxers while trying to promote them as huge events. Sound familiar?

There's been a few cases of boxers suing their manager/promoter over conflicts of interest. Michael Watson won a court case over Mickey Duff and Evander Holyfield won a similar case against one of his managers in the 1980s.

They are differant but I have never met any who were not complete kunts.

They want to handle YOUR money, it should be the other way around.

i think this is right with the trainers %, then it changes once the fighter earns over a sertain amount for a fight, you have to arrange what % you pay the trainer i.e 3% 4% 5%, i think that was what the agg was about with hatton and mayweather/ graham they wanted there 10% but hatton diddn't want to pay that amount :TU:
