It was like 21-20 for Sosa. Thomas/Reed both in the challengers bracket will be a great fight if it happens later on this week. Sosa will probably win this division now that I think about it. But don't count out Herring, he makes people fight his fight if that makes sense lol.box_NYC wrote:Heard sosa and Thomas fight was good..Thomas gave Pedro sosa an undeserved 8 count then Pedro came back and dropped him..then sosa hit him with a hard right and knocked his mouthpiece out...don't know the final score but sosa was the victor

Hmm...That should not be a DQ. If you don´t make weight you lose by Walk Over (WO), you´re not disqualified. Unless USA Boxing have different rules than AIBA.NYAmateur90 wrote:1 p.m. session
141 lbs: Pedro Sosa, Bronx, N.Y., won on disqualification over Gary Allen Russell, III, Capitol Heights, Md., DQ
Re: USA Olympic Trials - Men's Boxing
That would make sense as to why Russell was allowed to box today (even though he didn't). I didn't know that rule. A walkover would put him into the challengers so he wasn't DQ'd from the tournament. Thanks for the info!locoxelbox wrote:Hmm...That should not be a DQ. If you don´t make weight you lose by Walk Over (WO), you´re not disqualified. 19-18. Squeaky close. To report on Herring/Reed, both hold their hands tight and high. I would have liked to see the score of this fight when it comes out

According to one of my buddies at the Trials (and part of the staff), Russell didn't show up for weigh ins this morning.

I'm a very humble guy and I knew coming into the fight with Michael Reed it would be one of my toughest... At the end of the first we were even in score, then after the 2nd I was told that I was up by 4, we knew Mike would come hard in the last round which resulted to the 19-18 victory in my favor... I know what I'm up against Wednesday but I will continue to stay focus and work harder but much love and respect to Michael and his team...

That's cool, Jamel. No live scoring changes the game, huh? Good luck tomorrow and hopefully y'all will see each other in the finals.Jamel wrote:I'm a very humble guy and I knew coming into the fight with Michael Reed it would be one of my toughest... Thank you DC and Mel... I appreciate the kind words...
Re: USA Olympic Trials - Men's Boxing
That's great Jamel! You have improved a lot since the '09 PAL's I think it was when I first saw you. A lot of open fights and tournaments will do that! Good luck!
I just found out from a USA official that they are doing live twitter updates on the fights. I don't know how twitter works lol, but maybe if you search it or you have an account they will give you results? Better than waiting on me!

isaac will go far in the pros with his style and speed..
Re: USA Olympic Trials - Men's Boxing
Jose Ramirez won, looked good against Sims. Jones and Vasquez won at 152 and Warren, Franklin, Sanchez and Simpson won at 114.

201+ lbs/winners bracket: Lenroy Thompson, Lenexa, Kan., dec. Dominic Breazale, Alhambra, Calif., 16-7
Observations - Byrd, Warren, Ramirez, and Thompson look to be going to Baku if they just stay focused. Ramirez score doesn't surprise me, it was close but he did win that fight. Odom-Brown is definitely the headliner Wednesday. A lot of people have been talking Imam up and he is super fast at 152, punches and bunches. Spence can bang and he can box. That will be fun to watch. And Raynell Williams looks a whole lot better than the post olympic years like 2009 and 2010. I still say Ramirez beats him by five points!

Any good links to coverage or photos of the bouts from day 2 on? Seems like the coverage dropped off after the first day of bouts.
A few surprises, close decisions and comebacks. Surprised to see Jekabson's stoppage of Blackwell and he sounded like he was a little dismissive of his first bout loss to Shimmell.
The situation with Russell is really bizarre...anyone know how much overweight he was?

USAB has prohibited publishing ANY photos or video for the trials. Another example of how you garner support for a sport that is trying to make a comeback. One on One wrote:Any good links to coverage or photos of the bouts from day 2 on? Pressure seems to be getting to a few boxers. I heard Semjay Thomas didn't make weight this am. 5lbs. over. Another 108lbs. boxer weighed in with all his clothes on. Didn't make weight either. I'll know if this is true in an hr when there are some walkovers, but I believe it to be true. Edit: Here's the story. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/gl ... 437.column

Re: USA Olympic Trials - Men's Boxing
I heard from a coach I spoke to this afternoon that winners of these trials must qualify for Olympics through World Championships (Top 8) and if they fail to, then the winners of next years USA's get to try via the America's Cup. If this is true, then why are these called the Olympic Trials? Someone please confirm or shoot this down.

Re: USA Olympic Trials - Men's Boxing
Yep they told us all the same thing day one and the excuse was to keep the boxers active or something but of course there was an outcry afterwards with the same exact thing you just said "why are these called the olympic trials" "what are we fighting for then?" I hope that rule eventually changes though...DCAmateurBoxing wrote:I heard from a coach I spoke to this afternoon that winners of these trials must qualify for Olympics through World Championships (Top 8) and if they fail to, then the winners of next years USA's get to try via the America's Cup.
