Craig Payne's amateur record

Post by Grimm »

I know he is not well known, but he is supposed to be an amateur legend and he also beat Mike Tyson and Teofilio Stevens.

To be an amateur legend he would have had to won the Olympics or been a world champion. Beating Mike Tyson doesn't make him a legend. That fight became important only after Tyson became heavyweight champion of the world. It wasn't that important at the moment. The victory over Stevenson was important but it would've been huge if it was at the Olympics.

I didn't say because he beat Mike Tyson it made him a legend and that's not the point I am asking for his amateur record not why he's not a legend.

Payne had the skills to be a red hot pro but he fell in love with the Vegas night life & stopped showing up in the gym. Dont know how he funded his spending for the first four years of inactivity in his pro career.

Payne reckons he ruined a whole bunch of promising prospects by dragging them down with him. One of them was James Broad.

Sorry to go a bit off topic.

A guy I know insists that Payne also beat Holyfield in the amateurs, but no one else seems to back that up. I guess I'll get into an argument with him again now that Payne record one again is a topic.

Payne vs Holyfield ???

Post by Venceremos »

No way.

In Amateurs, Payne was a Super Heavyweight (+91kg) , while Holyfield was a Light Heavyweight (81kg).

You may see some about Holyfield in http://www.geocities.com/pedrinet/evander.html

Bye,

I somehow have the tape of the Tyson/Payne amateur fight. It must have been my grandads or something.

Payne was fat even then. Tyson kept lunging in with knockout shots and all Payne had to do is keep sliding away and spearing him with his jab, occasionally banging him with right hands. It was pretty repetetive actually.

I also have tapes of him against Teo, Biggs, some others too probably. He was defnitely a major waste of talent if he had trained and buckled down he would have fought for a title as a pro.

That was a bad year Teófilo Stevenson when he fought Payne. Did Payne look good against the Cuban Missile Launcher? Or was it more a case of Stevenson looking old? Or a mixture of both even?

It just looked like Payne got the better of Teo that day when they boxed and out worked him. Payne had a hard head so Teo couldnt budge him with that big right. Teo did not look old or over the hill.

I spar at Tigers gym and one day you'll beat a guy up the next time he might get the better of you, the amateurs are only very short fights.

Payne was definitely a high class boxer though. I would love to hear the details of his 2 rd kayo loss to Jorge Luis Gonzales if anyone knows about it.
