Martin Rogan rejects huge offer to face Tyson Fury

By David Kelly, Belfast Telegraph
Thursday, 11 August 2011

Tyson Fury has been left fuming by Martin Rogan’s decision to reject a highly lucrative offer to face the British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion at the King’s Hall on September 17.

Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessy was yesterday informed by Rogan that he would not be willing to face Fury. This came 24 hours after he reportedly stated, regarding Fury, that he would “knock him out and beat him senseless”.

Hennessy said: “I can’t believe that Martin has turned down the offer to fight Tyson. He was given all he wanted — one of the best purses he’s ever had, a chance to fight for both titles and fighting in his home city.

“In the end Martin talked a good fight with Tyson but that was all, he just didn’t want to fight him and that’s a shame.”

Unbeaten Canadian Neven Pajkic was the second choice but he has also refused to face Fury who is now one of the hottest properties in world boxing.

Fury, who was denied the chance to box for Ireland at the Olympics three years ago, will now move on and face a new opponent.

Hennessy added: “Tyson can’t wait to get back in the ring after such a great win against Dereck Chisora.”

Assuming he will be fighting a Brit there really isn't too many options out there for that date, id guess at Audley?

So who is likely to face Tyson now?

Got to be a semi decent name to build on the Chisora win.
Will it be on Ch5 again?

"Huge" offer is undisclosed. Huge in what context? Rogan's not the kind of guy to avoid someone, so I'd imagine he feels he deserves more money for the fight.

i was gonna ask the same how much was he offered ??? considering he's had two easy wins since sexton and only just in the top ten in britain i would say £30.000 would be good money for him what do you think :TU:

Really? How about Fury slaps his way to a wide UD, I think Fury needs someone to really go at him to be in a good entertaining fight. I don't see 40 or is it 41 year old Rogan doing that.

Im not sure aud doesnt need the money and he wants to win back some pride, he'll be fighting Fury or Perez imo (perez is all wrong for Harrison).

I hate in when promoters make vague comments.

They shouldn't really talk about a mans wages / purse, but to use words such as "huge" - what does that mean?

Boxing contracts are also more complicated than "Boxer A will fight Boxer B on this date for £x" - for all we know there could be all kind of options attached that the promoter has not mentioned.

Also, the date is not far away - for all we know Rogan may not be in training or may have been injured ?

It may also be a negotiating tactic by Rogan - Fury is determined to show his "Irish roots".

The implication is that Rogan doesn't fancy it. I don't know the bloke but from what I have seen of him he doesn't seem the type to shy away from a fight.

The board won't allow Meehan and Botha so struggling to find other commonwealth opponents. Is leapii any good?
