Danny Williams boxes on
Just noticed Danny Williams is down to fight 47year old Americain Al Cole in Sweden next month. Is there really a point in this fight? Is their combined age not almost 90.
Re: Danny Williams boxes on
Maybe the winners name will be thrown into the mix for Furys next opponent in Dublin.DougieC30 wrote:Just noticed Danny Williams is down to fight 47year old Americain Al Cole in Sweden next month. Is there really a point in this fight? Is their combined age not almost 90.

Williams has said that he is fighting on because he can't face the idea of giving up. I think that's the point of the fight as far as he is concerned.DougieC30 wrote:Just noticed Danny Williams is down to fight 47year old Americain Al Cole in Sweden next month. It must be hard for him to pack it in completely but he can stayt in the game at some level. Get his trainers liscence or something. I just don't like seeing guys box on when they could be putting themselfs in danger of getting hurt.J-C wrote:Williams has said that he is fighting on because he can't face the idea of giving up. Would hate to see him punchy - which is exactly what he's going to end up like. He deserves better than that.

Re: Danny Williams boxes on
I think Danny Williams continuing his career highlights just what a special talent it is to become a proper world champion.... so many qualities. You've got to love to fight, you've got to love to train, got to talent etc. Sure, some champions are stronger in some of the qualities than others, but really you've got to love it all.
I don't know, but I would make an educated guess that there are more fighters who like the training but never have (or lose) their fighting guts... the love of fighting. The real gym nuts who are first there and last to leave, but just lack it when it comes the different pain of punching. In most cases, such people will not stick around that long and just continue the keep fit side of things (nowt wrong with that). Danny is a clear exception, loves to fight but clearly wasn't a fan of putting in the foundations - such a shame.
I never thought Danny would continue for so long, let alone fight for next to nothing (which is what he has said). When he first came on the scene it looked like a pushy parent scenario, it seemed Danny's father was more interested in boxing than Danny. Whether Danny learned to love it, "started to enjoy the pain" (as Clint Eastwood once said) or its just a force of habbit that he cannot switch off - it seems Danny is a much different person than the one who turned pro.
Its funny this fight is being sanctioned in Sweden of all places. I thought they would be really stricted with their licences. Both Cole and Williams know what their doing, but then I would imagine the risk of injury and trauma increases as you get older and your reflexes dull.

I remember he was part of what they called The Triple Threat team - Light Welter Charles Murray, Cruiser Al Cole and Heavy Ray Mercer all under the same manager.Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:x2Final round wrote:Too many hard nights, stop fighting mate.

All somewhat unfashionable fighters but all could all fight couldn't they?TerribleTerry wrote:I remember he was part of what they called The Triple Threat team - Light Welter Charles Murray, Cruiser Al Cole and Heavy Ray Mercer all under the same manager.Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:x2Final round wrote:Too many hard nights, stop fighting mate.

He should have packed it in after the Chisora fight. Sad stuff.
Re: Danny Williams boxes on
Yeah that was sad to see every punch chisora landed seem to make Williams legs go abit that night And he effectively said he was a 'shot' fighter in the build up to that one and now he is having a 3rd fight in his 'comeback'ShadrachSimmo wrote:He should have packed it in after the Chisora fight. He was stone-cold robbed against Manuel Charr. I can't even put that down to inept refereeing.

He got robbed in similar circumstances in another recent fight IIRC? It is horrible when you see him with his head down after knowing he was never going to win. Is there not a job within the game that can pay his bills?
Re: Danny Williams boxes on
That's the first time I've seen that, he looked pretty puffed out after throwing all those punches and even though the stoppage was premature it looked like he'd gassed himself out. The stoppage was certainly not worse than the shocking decision he got against Big John Mcdermott. One things for sure that guy wouldn't have lasted long against a prime Danny Williams.carlbcfc wrote:oliverfennell wrote:He was stone-cold robbed against Manuel Charr. Re: Danny Williams boxes on
Inept refereeing yes, stone cold robbed - No. How can he be? For me Charr was winning a tight fight at the time of the rediculous stoppage - there is no way anyone can say that Danny was robbed by the ref of a certain victory.oliverfennell wrote:He was stone-cold robbed against Manuel Charr. I would think had this been a "meaningful" fight for Danny, with something on the line then he would be appealing for an immediate rematch and would get one.... but to say he was robbed of a definate victory is a bit much. It wasn't as if there was looking like a stoppage the other way just before, Charr was landing some shots and was in the lead.
Terrible decision by the ref granted.

Re: Danny Williams boxes on
I didn't mean robbed of victory, but more robbed of the chance of victory. Yes, Charr was winning up until then, but it was close, and it was highly conspicuous that mere seconds after Williams had looked dangerous for the first time, it was him who was "rescued" by the referee.stujones wrote:Inept refereeing yes, stone cold robbed - No. How can he be? Re: Danny Williams boxes on
I just think applying the term robbed in any context for the fight is a bit harsh on Charr.... it wasn't his fault, all he did was punch Danny. Inept refereeing at its worst I agree.
Saying Danny was robbed is a bit like saying McCloskey was robbed against Khan..... both were terrible refereeing decisions, but it wasn't the opponents fault.

Re: Danny Williams boxes on
Of course, never said it was the opponent's fault in the slightest. Just highly suspicious refereeing.
Re: Danny Williams boxes on
Danny Williams has without a doubt been a good servant to British Boxing. He became British Champion and had quite a few high profile contests, some he won others he did not, obviously the Tyson victory came at the right time for him.
He has been around for a long time now but its time to hang up the gloves now especially after the Chisora fight, he didn't hardly throw a punch.
It is hard to see such a popular fighter go on for too long, but most times they just wont listen to common sense and pack up, which is a shame, hopefully one day soon he will see the light.
Danny you have done your bit for British Fight History, move on and dont get yourself hurt which is what will happen.
