Rubin Carter vs Holly Mims question.

Post by KOJOE90 »

I have heard rumours that in the 22/12/62 Middleweight 10 round fight between Rubin Carter and Holly Mimms that Mims 'had the cuffs on'.

Has anyone else heard this?

I know that the stylist Mims was coming to the end of his career and took the fight at short notice and that Carter was the hot prospect looking for a title fight.

In the fight itself Mims gave Carter a lot of problems and seemed to hurt the rampaging Carter a few times but mostly fought a defensive fight, but I understand that was not unusual for Mims.

Carter of course won on points.

Any thoughts fight fans? :TU:

Carter-Mims

Heard the same story. Also heard that when Carter found out he was fighting Mims, that he went ballistic. I guess he didn't want any part of a cutie. Anyways, Teddy Brenner, according to the story, had to sit him down and explain to Carter that "You can't lose!" Even though it was supposedly set in stone, Mims dropped Carter during the fight because, according to Mims, "Even though I can't win, I still like to let them know that I was there."

Interesting, thanks for the feedback. From the little I have seen of Holley Mims and what I have read on him he seemed to be an outstanding and highly skilled fighter.

I thought Mims won the fight as it actually played out.

Mims won the fight, knocked Carter down, lost the 'decision'..

Against Joey Archer, Mims won the fight, knocked Archer down, lost the 'decision'..

Mims and Georgie Benton were both mob controlled fighters who were championship level,

and were never going to get a chance at the title.

When Mims was barely 20 years old he beat Sugar Ray Robinson and lost the decision.

Mims said Robinson later admitted to him that Mims won the fight.
(Robinson's very next fight after he won the middleweight title from LaMotta.)

Mims fought Joey Archer, Carter and Emile Griffith with less than a week's notice.

Hogwash. Mims lost every round on all three judges scorecards and was dropped to boot. Guy Butler, writing for the Miami News gave Robinson 8 rounds with 2 even. Mims gave a good performance against the best fighter in the world but he was clearly beaten.

Which fight?

Robinson
Mims said he had dinner at Robinson's house some time after that fight
and that Robinson and Robinson's wife Edna Mae both told him they thought he won the fight.

That fight ruined Mims' career instead of helping him. After that nobody wanted to fight him.

Giardello
Mims couldn't even get the decision in a fight he won in his own supposed home town,.

Archer
See the fight.

Carter
See the fight.
