You say they have no fan base. You need to visit Cuba!
With out the Amateur game their would be some very poor Pro's, all sports have a learning curve. Some of the greatest Boxers of all time could have been KOd in there first fight if it was not for their Amateur Experience!
Do you expect fighters to go pro without trying the sport out? Amateurs is just sport. Pro game is fun to watch but is all about money!
But people do care about the Amateurs, boxing fans atleast. Take the Amateurs away and see what will happen to Boxing!

im not saying amatuers is unnecesary.. im saying its boring.. like AAA is boring in baseball.. and the canadian/european leagues are boring in football.. but i wouldnt waste 5 bucks to see 2 people i dont know/dont care who wins, and they get nothing when they win but another win added to ther 50000-1000 record

Have you ever boxed.
Some ppl spend their entire career in the amateurs because it is boxing at its purest.
No Don King etc or any other dodgy promoters, no one trying to make a fast buck out of some poor kids miss givings.
My friend and I started amateur boxing at age 14. I am now 44 but in the years I was involved as a fighter and then as a coach I have travelled to most of the world.
There may be no financial gain from the sport but to get to a level especially like my mate to be challenging for titles far bigger than the National title is in itself.
In a country like the USA (which is a very large rich country) where the dollar is the most important thing in ppls lives. You have to be Oscar, or Sugar Ray or whoever with your face on TV every night before you get any recognition Each city has its own Golden Gloves champion, then you have a state champion before you make national champion. Most Amateur Champions are unheard of until they win a Gold at the Olympics
In a much smaller European nation the accolade of a national amateur title can be just as important as a world title fight.
In the town where I live we have a former 7 times Scottish Amateur, 1 time British ABA Champion and a representative for his country at World, Commonwealth, Olympic & European Amateur Championships.
His face is just as recognisable as a former WBC Lightweight Champion who lives here also.
So before you have a go at scrapping amateur boxing look around there are thouisands of ppl throughout the world who use amateur boxing as a way to escape the humdrum of daily life. Some get to be champions, for the most it keeps them off street corners shooting up or out of jail.
And without the training regime or the basic knowledge to climb into the ring and last 3 rounds where would Sugar Ray Leonard or Oscar De Lahoya have been without Amateur boxing.
