European Youth Boxing Championships Dublin 22nd of August
European Youth Boxing Championships Dublin 22nd of August
Ireland has picked a ten man team but is without its two best youth boxers as Joe Ward will be in training camp with the senior team for the upcoming World championships and Michael O'Reilly who won boxer of the tournament at the recent Bradenburg cup were he hammered the Russian, Khazack, German and Ukranian youth champions was thrown off the team for a disciplinary incident .
The event starts on the 22nd in Citywest Hotel in Dublin and I hope to get over for a few of the days should be a good one . Its a pity O'Reilly and Ward are out as they would have been the Gold medal favourites .
I do expect Ireland to still win a few medals with the likes of Senior champion Michael McDonagh ,Christy Joyce ,Keiron Forde and Stephen Broadurst the most likely to medal imo.
Irish Squad -
49Kg: Evan Metcalfe (Crumlin)
52Kg: Joe Fitzpatrick (Immaculata)
56Kg: George Bates (St Mary's)
60Kg: Michael McDonagh (St Mary's)
64Kg: Kieran Forde (Monivea)
69Kg: Christy Joyce (St Michael's Athy)
75Kg: Stephen Broadhurst (Dealgan)
81Kg: Gary Sweeney (All Stars)
91Kg: Jack Morrissey (Sacre Coeur)
91+Kg: Thomas Conroy (Ballyhaunis)
Coaches: Billy McClean, Tony Davitt, Gus Farrell and Paddy Hughes.

Re: European Youth Boxing Championships Dublin 22nd of August
Have now had a chance to look at the draw and as expected some of the big names are missing no doubt in readiness for next months Senior World championships.
At 49KG in the top half I would expect Russian Mamedov to come through and perhaps face former world champion Koryun Sogomonyhan from Armenia in the final.
At 52 its anyones guess as to who comes through the top half as the big guns are in the lower half and Russian Vetkin is favoured.
Using the same basis my idea of the remaining finals are
56 Theo Krechlok v Radzhab Butayev
60 Roy Kharmats v Parvis Bagirov or Michael Mcdonagh
64 Ricardas Kuncaitis v Zaur Abdullayev or Kieran Forde
69 Michael O Reilly v Igor Kharitonov
75 Magomed Madiyev or Muhammad Bangaev v Rauf Rahimov or Stephen Broadhurst
81 Burak Aksin or Vladimir Korsunov V Alexandre Dovkadze
91 Ivan Verhyasov or Victor Alimov v Yauheni Shasko or Roman Fress
+91Heydar Heydarov v Gasan Gimbatov

Re: European Youth Boxing Championships Dublin 22nd of August
Was over in Citywest today some good wins for Ireland .
George Bates was very unlucky to lose to the Russian Butayev on a countback thought he deserved imo .
Stephen Broadhurst won well he is very relaxed in the ring and won well against Wales.
Gary Sweeney won well today against a black Ukranian Bidenko (I thought I was seeing things) and well deserved his victory .
Also was impressed with the Russian at 81kg Korshunov, Scotlands 56kg Mark McKeown, Italys 75kg Ranno and Turkeys 81kg Askin.

Re: European Youth Boxing Championships Dublin 22nd of August
O'Reilly was robbed , 3 judges had O'Reilly winning and the other 2 had it a draw so its strange how he lost . he clearly won the fight by 3 points imo but Russia is Russia and they seem to never be on the end of a bad decision . Gutted for O'Reilly .
