Depends on whether Ortiz falls into the trap and previous Mayweather opponants and let's him dictate the pace of the fight. If Ortiz fights with the same conviction he did against Berto it could get interesting. Mayweather doesn't ever punch when his opponants are punching, so the important thing is to be aggressive rather than tentative. People still have to much of a hangover on Ortiz, because the Maidana fight. That's in the past and the fact is he's a quality fighter.

Totally agree and the boy can bang as well, He has to jump on Mayweather and try and force the fight, dont let him settle and get the rustiness out of his system. I think he bangs hard enough to put Floyd down, whether he can keep him there is another thing.

I give the kid a chance, would love to see him pull it off.

'check-hook' was just that, punching while Hatton was punching/leaping in.

Mayweather may have some hairy moments early on, but once he gets into his stride, he'll take over. I wouldn't be surprised if he stops him. Against crude brawlers, Mayweather has a pretty good stoppage rate. Look what he did to Hatton, this guy is probably on the same level as Hatton, and has a similar lunging style.

Ortiz's feet get very squared up, and his chin pops right up in the air when he's throwing combos, too.

Your highlighting one incident. I'm talking in general terms.

i was highlighting it as an exemplar rather than an isolated incident, AoW.

Floyd's one of the better counterpunchers in world boxing. he countered De la Hoya out of throwing the jab, with that counter right hand. its difficult, to say the least, to be a great counterpuncher, if you don't throw when your opponents are throwing. like when Corrales was trying to throw the jab and Mayweather inside-slipped it and knocked him down with about 19 left hook counters.

I don't agree with your general point, is all.

Fair enough, but if you look back over his fights, anytime an opponant has done well against him it's because they've pushed him back and made him cover up by throwing. When do you ever see him trading?

He makes opponants tentative with those quick counter rights he throws and the left hook, but your always gonna get hit in a fight so you have to stick with what your doing and not allow him to slow the fight down and dictate.

If you push Floyd back and let your hands go, he's not going to open up with you, he will look for single openings. That's not enough to win a fight if his opoonant sticks with it, the problem is they don't.

What Ortiz did against Berto makes me believe he's got a chance with Floyd. He's just got to go in the the same one track mind and not be put off by anything.

True. Floyd will land that straight right (and anything else he pleases) at will.

Complete mismatch.

Ortiz, at best will, will win 4 rounds. And most of them will probably from higher workrate.

i think the reason they don't stick with it is cos he counters the fvck out of them or makes them fear that he will.

otherwise basically its like suggesting his opponents don't really want to win, like, all they had to do to beat Floyd was throw more punches, more often. i guess they thought of that already, its just easier said than done

i agree though if you take the Castillo fight as an example, it was the fact he kept moving his hands in more than isolated ones and twos that gave Floyd problems. however he was also, which doesn't get mentioned much, using some angles to create openings, and he didn't mind hitting shoulders and artms

however its not enough just to move your hands more. DLH (haven't seen it since it happened so here goes with my memory...), i saeem to recall, ended up throwing what a former poster round here called washerwoman flurries. surfe, he was moving his hands plenty. he just was too scared, for want of a better word, to commit to fully-torqued power shots, because when he sat down and tried to hurt Floyd, he got punched in the face.

= goodnight Vienna.

Mayweather may decide he needs the rounds, but if someone is there for the taking, he usually goes for the killer blow.

Your right, but what i'm saying you've got to be able to go through the fire to beat someone like Floyd. I don't think it's the counters that kill his opponants, not on there own. It's the fact that his opponants don't land much back. Plenty of fighters are willing to take a couple of land a couple, but when your landing nothing thats what disheartens them. Ortiz can't let that happen.

I've never given Floyd's opponants much of a chance at beating him, but this one I do. I really think Ortiz can pull it off.

heh. thing is, if Ortiz does let his hands go, his feet squaring up and chin popping up as i mentioned above could mean curtains for him anyway

Maybe but in close he's not in as much danger when squaring up. The bottom line is he's not gonna win on the outside in any sort of boxing match which is what Mayweather has a knack for drawing his opponants into. You've got to put the odds in your favour as much as possible. My feeling is going into the Floyd fight with the same attitude as the Berto fight gives Ortiz his best shot at winning.

I’m looking forward to the pre-fight build up. Anyone come out with the, “Floyd has the edge in skill, ability & ring generalmanship so Ortiz’s greater toughness will come into play…if you utterly discount the fact that Ortiz quit against Maidana," line yet?

Also can’t wait for Harold Lederman’s scoring, “I gotta say, Ortiz is walking forward in straight lines, getting caught with every shot in the book & was on the deck twice in the last round but he is coming forward, he looks slightly miffled & he’s grunting when he throws his shots so I’ve gone with his aggression. JIM!”

Ortiz UD12 by way of scary facial expression :TU:
