Has Haye Killed PPV?
Has Haye Killed PPV?
David Haye has conned the nation twice with his acting. I have to give it to him. But now Sky has decided to cease PPV boxing due to all these gready promoters including Amir Khan. Is this a good thing or will we suffer because sky will not televise some big fights?

Re: Has Haye Killed PPV?
Haye cannot take the blame alone.
If PPV is indeed dead, except for the largest events, I'm all for it.

Re: Has Haye Killed PPV?
Only on sky,pay per view is here to stay sadly.
Re: Has Haye Killed PPV?
The fact that Sky missed out on the Mayweather Ortiz fight shows me their lack of commitment to boxing.
I cancelled my Sky TV today, will be moving to Freesat for general tv, and get my fix of boxing via streams/torrents etc. Fed up of subsidising the Premiership :)

Re: Has Haye Killed PPV?
I did that at the start of 2011 when I moved house and didn't immediately have Sky tv. Thanks to the internet you need not miss a thing. Wish I'd done it years ago. The sport of boxing in this country is quite small when you think about it, yet its full of people who aim to become, or stay, rich.Heiwa wrote:The fact that Sky missed out on the Mayweather Ortiz fight shows me their lack of commitment to boxing.

Re: Has Haye Killed PPV?
Its not Hayes fault, sky got greedy with ppv's thats what killed it.
Re: Has Haye Killed PPV?
haye has killed heavyweight boxing :!:
Re: Has Haye Killed PPV?
Not completely, only on Sky. And it wasn't just him to be fair. Having Degale-Groves on PPV was ridiculous. Even if Clev had fought Braehmer on top of the bill, it still wasn't PPV-worthy.
I resent paying extra to watch boxing, but usually end up doing so for fear of missing something (which, I guess, makes me part of the problem). And I think I'm not the only one who does that, which means PPV will not die altogether.
I read somewhere that C5 will be showing HBO's 24/7 on Mayweather-Ortiz. It will be interesting to see how the whole C5-Primetime thing develops when it comes to boxing.

The last khan ppv did worse numbers than mccloskey. Can see mayweather not doing well at 4am. Channel 5 I don't hold out for much, if fury fights a poor opponent it won't help figures. Also it be against match of the day!greenyox3 wrote:Not completely, only on Sky. And it wasn't just him to be fair. Having Degale-Groves on PPV was ridiculous. Re: Has Haye Killed PPV?
All true, but I do think quite a few would rather pay to watch Mayweather than Khan. He's the joint-biggest star in the sport after all. And add the fact that Big Brother is now on C5, which means a LOT of people (ahem, not including me...I swear) will be seeing the adverts for the fights and 24/7 shows, and that = a lot more interest.leforge wrote:The last khan ppv did worse numbers than mccloskey. I didn't realise Khan v Judah did bad PPV numbers. Good. Golden Boy/Khan promotions deserve it for being too greedy too soon. I was 100% with Sky on that one, was glad they didn't back down.
Re: Has Haye Killed PPV?
Don't think Mayweather without sky constant advertsing will sell well 15qid for 4am is not worth it. I never watch channel 5 nor do most of my mates as it has fornicate all on it. Channel 4 scrapped big brother the reason was viewing figures!greenyox3 wrote:All true, but I do think quite a few would rather pay to watch Mayweather than Khan. Re: Has Haye Killed PPV?
Sky are trying to take the moral high ground and say no more
(after they made bags of cash on Haye/Audley-Klitchsko) but the real reason Sky have 'dumped' PPVPPV because there is feck all on the horizon the general public will shell out for.
Khan's happily shuffled over to Primetime and Froch doesn't have the crossover appeal there is no-one near PPV at the moment.
As for blaming Haye it takes two to tango.

Froch could be ppv by summer of next year with few more fights. Warren bills I reckon sold fornicate all.Final round wrote:Sky are trying to take the moral high ground and say no more(after they made bags of cash on Haye/Audley-Klitchsko) but the real reason Sky have 'dumped' PPVPPV because there is feck all on the horizon the general public will shell out for.

Then again he could be one fight away from never being PPV if he loses against Ward who's going to cough up to see him against Bute' Hopkins, Cloud ,Dawson.Pascal (Talking general public here, I'd love to see him against any of them bar Hopkins) I suppose a match against Cleverley would be big if he keeps winningleforge wrote:Froch could be ppv by summer of next year with few more fights. Whatever the reason, if it is the case that PPV has had a good slap then excellent say I. Sky were taking the piss.

Suffer? fuk em, lets rip them right off!!
Re: Has Haye Killed PPV?
dont really think so.....i think your forgetting history.....if sky do pull out u can bet your arse itv 1 or bbc or c5 will be in thereKing Geedorah wrote:Sky have pissed on their own feet with this one. Boxing is one of the few sports in which PPV actually works. Football fans, the customers Sky really care about, were hit with PPV a few years ago & didn’t go for it. Sky then tried to switch the odd big game to it, slashed prices & introduced a season ticket & people were still sceptical. Football fans have a sense of their own worth to the network so it didn’t work with them.
It works with boxing, one-off events that people will pay for if they’re worth the money. At first they were worth the money, many went from 8pm UK time through to a US main event. People were relatively happy with them & paid so Sky, like any company, started to chip away at the quality and depth until we reached the current situation.
You can blame Haye, blame Warren but those are symptoms, Sky must hold ultimate responsibility as they had a PPV audience & alienated them.
As for Haye, I think his recent fights harmed the fighter himself & Sky. Sure, they were building up to Klitschko but the fights leading up to it, Ruiz & Harrison, were not PPV worthy, nor did they bother with a strong undercard, & the contests themselves turned Haye into a 1-D, right hand crazy slugger who’s technique slipped with every passing round. Many, myself included, hoped that he would revert to the tactically astute fighters we’d seen in the past when he got to Wlad but it wasn’t to be, nor did they put on a decent undercard for a massive showcase event.
Khan & his team also cop some blame but look at it from their perspective, they are taking on McCloskey, it is not PPV material but it is a domestic match up, like Harrison, & they & Hatton Promotions put together a card that wasn’t built to withstand withdrawal etc. Sky pull the plug & it strikes as an arbitrary move as they put it on the toes of the undercard whilst ignoring the fact that Haye-Harrison had a dreadful bill & the chief support, Groves-Anderson, carried the entire show.
Now Sky might turn around & say, “Sod boxing, it is fucked up”, without acknowledging that they’ve helped create the current situation. Sky pulling out of the sport on general would be a disaster but they have to shoulder a lot of blame themselves for the current PPV mess.
