I remember watching his fights as a kid. He had some HELLACIOUS fights. "from Rahway State Prison.......James Scott ! ". He retired 19-2-1, with his last fight a loss to Dwight Qawi. I think I remember that he couldn't get a title fight because a) the prison wouldn't furlough him, and/or b) no one wanted to fight for a belt inside a prison. Does anybody remember the particulars of his career, and why he retired?

I believe that Qawi-Scott was actually an eliminator to challenge for Matthew Saad Muhammad's title. Qawi beat Scott and then beat Saad to become world champion. He didn't mind fighting there because he had been an inmate there himself.

according to boxrec his fight with eddie mustafa muhammad was a 12 round fight... that had to have been for a title, right??

I found a small article about the Mustafa - Scott fight at Hardcoreboxing.net. No it wasn't a title fight, but Scott did win the decision. thanks for your interest. and for the above, yes, you are correct in that the Qawi fight was the eliminator. I'd just like to hear from others who remember what a good fighter he was. Why'd he retire so suddenly though?

Mediocre? Did you ever watch any of his matches, or just going by articles you've read? Remember, he did outpoint Eddie Mustafa Muhammed before he lost to Qawi. I don't remember him "crying & whining" about his situation. All he was asking for was a chance for the title. But then again, tickets don't sell well inside a prison. I just thought his career could have gone longer. I suppose after his title chance, he might have given up trying for a second shot at the belt.

I deleted all the posts that were not relevant to the thread, except ringsiders posts, his was deleted because instead of trying to argue a point he insulted the poster. You have a warning ringsider...this is not a place to insult and call people dumbasses, no matter how much you might disagree with what they are saying, good debate yes, insults take it somewhere else!

As to James Scott, no he should not have got a world title fight behind bars and he didn't, but he was one of the top light heavyweights of that time...he was a bull and the only two that beat him, beat him at his own game because they were rougher and tougher than he was, one was Jerry Martin and the other Dwight Qawi...had Scott not been in prison he would have very likely been a world champion, but then again had he not been in prison, he more than likely would not have been as dedicated to training as he was because thats all he could do!

I put a post about this dude a while back, I remember watching him fight on tv back in the day, he was tough. Everyone that fought him had to go inside Rahway State Penn to fight him. I believe they passed a law or something that he could not fight while in prison, I wonder if he is still in jail..I think he had life.

I think the last point is really spot on. I think it was either CBS Sports Spectacular or ABC's Wide World of Sports that used to televise Scott's fights. I recall Scott used to do hundreds and hundreds of sit ups and push ups and various other exercises. What else was there to do? Put him back out in society, though, and it seems doubtful he would have been so dedicated to his fitness.

Now theres a blast from the past.

Now if I recall the man was inside for an armed robbery or his vehicle was used in an armed robbery Whether he was there was heresay.

Anyway 20years in the big house, what do you do except 1000 sit ups and push ups a day.

This guy was allowed to box as a means to rehablitation, provided the major fights were televised and the purse went into the New Jersey Penal system.

Anyway Scott should have been World Champion except the rules also stated as long as he was incarcerated he could not fight for a title, even though he did fight and win an eliminator.

I think James proved he was capable of winning a world title and when he reached that peak knowing that wqas as far as the prison authorities were going to let him go to he retired.

I think one of the reasons that Scotts Boxing career ended was that there was a change of Head Warden/Guvnor at the prison who was not interested in a Boxing programme or Scotts career.

I remember watching James fight and I'm pretty sure the law or prison regs were changed to stop his career.

Scott was 36 at the time of his last fight, so his enforced retirement couldn't have curtailed his career by much.

Good point. I didn't realize he was that old when he was fighting. Still, it was fun to watch him.
