Danny "Little Red" Lopez and Matthew Saad Muhammad...hands down, Gatti comes close, but even he was not as exciting as these two, especially Lopez!

..dipping back into the early days of tv ralph tiger jones was an exciting fighter. kept coming forward...kept punching...fought most of the top names and didn't win against many of them...but kept it interesting and made them go all out. rocky graziano...even in his post title days was exciting....especially because he fought so many welterweights who outboxed him for a while...but he always kept it suspensful....when would he land one of his right hand bombs....and sometimes he did after being way behind on rounds.

If you want to see REAL ACTION, Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini, Bobby Chacon, Matthew Saad Muhammad, Aaron Pryor, Thomas Hearns and Danny Lopez were the most exciting fighters that I have ever seen

I'm basing this on what I read because I didn't watch fights in the 50's, but wasn't power punching Bob Satterfield an excellent TV fighter? Kind of like he got you or you got him.

Can someone explain more about him?

Satterfield had brutal punching power and could lay anyone out with one shot from either hand, only problem was..he could be laid out with one shot as well. I've read reports of most of his fights and it was always an exciting brawl whenever he fought. It's hard to say what his best punch was because he hit just as good with either fist, but I would say that his left hook was probably his best. He was almost always was the smaller fighter. Below are some notes and weight for several of his bouts. He also supposedly had 27 knockouts in 35 amateur bouts, but I've only been able to track down a few of his amateur bouts. Tommy Gomez was another small heavyweight from around that time who could also knock opponents cold with one punch!

....much more complete than my satterfield post i just made last night on a different thread...something about power related to weight.

ezzard charles said he fought his first round against satterfield on instintc after sattterield landed on of his bombs early in that round...came back to kayo him with one punch in the second....but he was out on his feet for a minute or two. i saw satterfield fight pretty often....and have talked to and heard about other guys who got hit by him....and they all agreed he was awesome.

...an unusual satterfield strory that i'd forgotten but this thread reminded me of.....twice satterfield called the police and had his wife arrested....because she attacked him!! came after him with her fists!! the clincher..she weighed around 110 pounds. now we all know blasting bob had no staying power and china chin....but it's safe to assume it was chivalry that saved this woman's life.....unless he was very very clever and boxed safely untile he got tired, which he was wont to do.

I'd heard something about Satterfield's wife attacking him as well, but had forgot all about it and I say that you are right about chivarly. I wonder if he is still living? I'd love to do a very in-dpeth article on him and his career. I'd also like to get a hold of some of his fight, I know he fought often on television.

How about Tommy Hearns? No matter how much he dominated an opponent he was only one punch away from being KO'd. The same for Tommy Morrison. The big punchers with suspect chins are great entertainment.

..barry....alas,satterfield is no longer with us. don't remember when he died but it was some time ago. check box rec for the year. a most colorful fighter, in or out of the ring. part of the reason for the"kayo by"
on his record was he seldom was in top condition. did much of his roadwork on the dancefloors of chicago. a handsome guy..flashy...and not resistant to the sins of the flesh. too often counted on his tremendous punch to make his fights short. he might have done a lot better than her did, because he could box pretty good when he chose to.

How much boxing was there 'in the early days of TV'...right around the time I was born, I was more into sleeping back then...I was under the impression that an occaisional couple hours on Friday nights was all that was available...boxing clubs were the main outlet then, were they not?

..maybe i'm off in my definition of early days of tv......i was referring to the early fifties.....friday night fights every week...ditto for wednesday night......saturday night for a while....and every monday night.

it was this proliferation of tv coverage that many felt was the death of local fight cards.....why would anyone pay to see a bunch of local guys when they could watch top contenders and most championship fights on tv? (this is not necessarily my viewpoint..but was the common one then.)

with the local smaller arenas fading because of this there was nowhere for the up and coming youngsters to learn their trade. so...a lot of them were rushed into tv fights before thery were ready..and some champions and seasoned veterans were able to hang around longer....too skillful and smart for the kids.

...Wow...pretty impressive for only having 3 or 4 channels available...and no...you're not off on your 'early TV' definition, that's the time frame I was talking about...

...by percentage of available air time & channels compared to today, that's almost 'saturation'...

Thanks for the info on Satterfield! I think you right hough in your assesment of how all the tv coverage pretty muchy ended the smaller clubs, but it did seem like it was a very prosperous time for boxing fans with fights on prime time almost every day of the week. Did you ever get to see Argentinian Eduardo Lausse much, I know he was pretty popular in New York whenever he travelled out of South America? Another couple of guys that I'm interested in were featherweights Charley Riley of St. Louis and Gene Smith of D.C. I think that Smith was in the olympics, may be wrong, but I was thinking that I read it somewhere...anyway..both were considered to be viscous punchers!
