I logged on when I saw this thread for the sole purpose of expressing my admiration for 'Second Too'.
I will say this:
James 'Lights Out' Toney v Michael 'Second Too' Nunn,
the greatest fight in history as measured by the combined value of nicknames?
Re: WHATS YOUR BEST BOXING NICK NAMES? "The Real Deal Holyfield"
None of you will know this guy but there's was a 6'5 US HW who really looked like Elvis called......."The King of the heavyweights" because his real name was Paul 'Elvis' Presley
Sadly he fought with a tender heart and a suspicious mind i.e. he was a big softy who was paraoid about getting hit.
I watched Shane Sutcliff beat him up once it wasn't pleasent.

Didn't he change his name to Fidal Castro Smith from something more conventional.Old bones Ian wrote:Thing was his name is Fidal Castro Smith anyway, i'm guessing that would of got him some attention to start withCounter-puncher wrote:to get attention?Jon Saxon wrote: Slugger Otoole, (always wondered what Brendan Ingle's logic was regarding all the mad names?)

Speaking of Smith's I liked James Bonecrusher Smith.

'The Heat', no not Stevenage's number one darts player Denis Ovens, James Kinchen.
If you can't stand 'The Heat' get out of the Kinchen...

The “Mexicutioner” is good
The “Hispanic causing panic” is good although already mentioned.
Johnny “The Entertainer” Nelson cracks me up, as he would put anybody to sleep in some of his fights.

I always liked
Two Ton Tony (Tony Galento)
The Sweet Swatter from Sweetwater, Texas (Lew Jenkins)
O'Neil "Give 'em Hell" Bell
But the best is simply,
The Greatest

Re: WHATS YOUR BEST BOXING NICK NAMES? "The Real Deal Holyfield"
You know what, I've seen him fight a number of times and heard the name but it's never twigged until you said it why he was called the Heat. I just thought it was one of those things, like he brings the heat.milpool wrote:'The Heat', no not Stevenage's number one darts player Denis Ovens, James Kinchen.

Some of those 80s middleweight guys had good nicknames
James "Hard Rock" Green
Frank "The Animal" Fletcher
John "The Beast" Mugabi
Wilbert "Vampire" Johnson - You had to see him to see why he was called the Vampire. He used to camp it up further by dressing as a vampire and having a coffin etc.
Darroll "Doin Damage" Wilson was another decentish nickname.

I think "Lights Out" Toney was inspired and ahead of its time, if that makes sense (ie before the vogue for less conventional names).
Most apt nickname, as somebody has already said, "The Greatest".
When Jess Harding was lined up to face Gary Mason, Barry Hearn said Harding would win and go on to face (a peak) Tyson. To help get the bandwagon going, Jess was christened, for (I believe) one fight only, "The Potters Bar Terminator". It was as inspired as it was wide of the mark
(Mason utterly destroyed Harding in two brutal rounds)

They actually nicked that one from John The Heat Verderosa, a flash super feather US TV favorite from the early 80's, whose rise to the top was halted when he was smashed by our own Boza Edwards.milpool wrote:'The Heat', no not Stevenage's number one darts player Denis Ovens, James Kinchen.
