Holmes v Holy

Post by Roars Like Me »

I was just watching an old re-run of these 2. When the final bell came, it seems Larry threw up. This may be common knowledge but it's new to me at least.

was this fight or the Mercer fight the best performance of Holmes's second career?

Mercer fight easily. I didn't think Holmes looked very good vs. Holyfield. Of course Holyfield was much better than Mercer but I still think Holmes looked much stronger against Mercer. As for throwing up in the ring after the Holyfield fight I thought it was common knowledge, it wasn't like he was trying to hide it or anything.

I think you could argue the Evander fight given the quality of opponent. At 42 years old he made Evander look stupid at times and I had the same score as Lederman 7-5 Holyfield.

Holmes made Evander look amateurish at times. Sure, Evander Won, but I had the same score 7-5 for Holyfield. Holmes was 42, & should be commended for giving such a showing at that age. This fight just puts into perspective Tyson's KO of Larry some four years earlier.

Tyson was/is the only man to ever do that to Holmes!

I agree. Holmes was my boyhood hero and it hurt like hell when Tyson knocked him out, but that was one hell of a performance by Tyson.

Impressive performance no doubt by Mike, but would Tyson been able to do that vs the older but not rusty Larry of the early 90s? I'm not so sure . . .

Yup, it just goes to show how much better Larry was here than the untrained, rusty guy that faced Tyson. It's night and day. The Holmes that fought Tyson gets his ass kicked by Mercer.

Tyson might have done it. That was his style to blast people out.

Problem for many is they see Tyson smear a guy across the canvas. Then they watch Holyfield go toe-to-toe over 12 and conclude Tyson was better.

Liston was consistently better against Paterson than Ali.

Some fighters win dramatically (and it's great) others win less so.
