Barry Michael and his take on the Fight game.
Barry Michael and his take on the Fight game.
Barry Michael has really cemented himself as a promoter and obviously 1 of the very few Australians to have won a belt at the world level, but has anyone ever noticed that his take on the fight game is a little off, he has fighters loosing when they're clearly ahead and vice versa. Like when he thought Geale and Sylvester where dead even going into the twelve, the time he thought Kessler and Mundine were dead even going into the 12th or how he blatently refused to acknowellege that Albert won a round last night.
His research is always off "Billy Dib being the third Australian to win a Super feather title, behind me and Lester Ellis"......Dib obviously holds the IBF featherweight title, and Andy Ramond found it hard to ignore what appeared to be another shameless plug about himself, despite vision switching to billy Dib being interviewed with IBF featherweight champion appearing on the teleprompter.
Just wondering what all of you thought, as it can be quite irratating when he's calling a fight and he's not in the ball park so to speak.

Re: Barry Michael and his take on the Fight game.
I am a huge admirer of Barry's, as a promoter and a champion. But I have found it difficult to listen to his commentating. It seems he gets a little one eyed when it comes to certain fighters. But with the respect he commands I suppose he get away with errors (as often as they are).
Re: Barry Michael and his take on the Fight game.
Dad used to listen to Merv Williams and say "Old pugs are bad judges."
Barry has nothing to apologize for as a fighter, the rest I don't care about. His opinion does not affect the judging.

Barry Michael as a commintator has allways been bias espesialy at Mundine fights. As a boxer he was great to watch won a WORLD Title by talking Lester Ellis,s ear off.You know these commintators should learn the opponits name and not just call them as the Phillipono guy. ![[icon_shame.gif] :shame:](./images/smilies/icon_shame.gif)

Barry is a biased commentator, especially in Chocs fights but I do agree Dawg - he is definitely off a little with what he sees. Maybe his eyes are just getting bad.
Although, I must say I also wasn't overly confident that Geale was to far ahead hgoing into the 12th. It was an odd fight that could have been getting scored differently depending on if you score volume over effectivness etc

Re: Barry Michael and his take on the Fight game.
Barry does have his favourites in fighters and tends to only see their good things in his commentary. He does sometimes gets his facts mixed up, for example calling John Akauola, a Filipino when he is not last Wednesday night.
Just as well Barry's unofficial scorecards are not used in fights.

It could be argued that Dib won the IBO Super Featherweight title, but that leaves out Robbie Peden (IBF) and Gairy St Clair (IBO) making Billy at least the fifth Australian to win a Super Featherweight belt. (I did not check the WBFs).Hounddawg wrote:Barry Michael has really cemented himself as a promoter and obviously 1 of the very few Australians to have won a belt at the world level, but has anyone ever noticed that his take on the fight game is a little off, he has fighters loosing when they're clearly ahead and vice versa. Re: Barry Michael and his take on the Fight game.

Re: Barry Michael and his take on the Fight game.
Ibo don't count either
Re: Barry Michael and his take on the Fight game.
Yeah mate..The IBO don't count, but it sure does have some decent champions with the belts, it's case is getting stronger and stronger, i still remember the WBO going thru very similar steps over a period of time.
Then On the other hand the WBF is a dud organisation, it can't work out whether it's a foundation or federation and it's lucky to have 3 champions over the entire weight class's at any given time, it's sanctioned title fights are complete mismatch's and reek of the standard ABC asia/africa/pacific rott, and unlike the WBF it doesn't sanction anything it can.

Re: Barry Michael and his take on the Fight game.
Gyorgy Hidvegi was a pretty typical WBF champ, holding their cruiserweight title for a few years. A Hungarian based mostly in England, Hidvegi had a short career, 14-1-1. The draw was against Paul Bonson whose 21-105-8 record explains the good record of some British fighters. Hidvegi's losing opponents were not all that famous.

It's just an itch he has to scratch every now and then.
He's harmless.
Actually aren't Barry Michael and Lester Ellis both POMS anyway?
Re: Barry Michael and his take on the Fight game.
Am I wrong? Both Ellis and Michael migrated out here as children
Jesus you are a sensitive lot.
Anyway, think of the poor Hungarians! Hidvegi is rated 16 on their all time pound for pound list.

Agreed but it is usually held with one of the big 4 so they con people into believing they are a unified champion also no mandatory defences and any body in the boxrec top 100 can fight for it.

Teddy Atlas holds on to that title very, very tightly, you'd have to pry it from his dead fingers to get that title.

Re: Barry Michael and his take on the Fight game.
When it comes to being biased i dont find Barry that bad, there is way worse than Barry in Australia, some fights you see in this country, you would think the whole promotion was staged. Its like they already know whos going to win before the fight happens, the way they talk about the fighter who is in bed with the promotor its a joke.dan h wrote:Barry is a biased commentator, especially in Chocs fights but I do agree Dawg - he is definitely off a little with what he sees.
